Show A Connecticut Railroad War Special to THE HERALD xamlnettDIspatchl BRIDGEPORT Conn Jan aiA serious clash between the two great railroads of this state has begun over the rights and ownership of property in this city Three thousand employees of the railroads were ready last evening to strike the first blow but injunction prevented serious trouble The Housatonic railroad company owns land over which the Consolidated road runs the main line of two tracks Between these tracks is a siding used by the Consolidated Con-solidated but owned by the Housatonic WhenTthe Consolidated was built the right of way on the track was rented for 4000 When thetwo tracks were laid four years agothe Housatonic demanded 4000 rent The land occupied is very valuable and is wanted by the Housatonic for freight yards The Consolidated showing no disposition dis-position to pay the extra rental the Housatonic company decided to seize and fence in all the Consolidated tracks on their property Several hundred Housa tonic workmen were sworn in as special policemen and the work was to be begun yesterday morning under the protection of Mayor De Forrest and the police department depart-ment The Consolidated company heard of the trouble and before the Housatonic people began work and ran a freight train from New York on the disputed tracks VicePresident Stevenson of the Housa tonic ordered the force to clear the track but before the trouble began An injunction injunc-tion was served on the Housatonic restraining restrain-ing them from interfering |
