Manti tho exact centre of the county in the exact centre of the territory and tho exact centre of the largest area of country in the west This will be noticedhyfcreferrin jo maps of thewestern part of the United States Now this should and is considered a good omen being the hub or axis of the west and all will centro to this beautiful and flourishing city K al < Manti was first settled in the year Ism by a band of aboufforty pioneers led by Mr Isaac Morley who had been delegated by that great western colonizer Brigham Young This hardy band of men had a work before them that was very discouraging inasmuch as itwas October before they loft Salt Lake city and winter was close on them but they bravely arrived in Manti in the month of November although real winter did not appear until Christmas day when it came in dead earnest the first storm depositing about three feet of snow which subsequently frosted over and cut off all chances for range feed for the winter Space will not allow a detailed history of the southern metropolis suffice to say Manti was established and in 1852 the city was incorporated On its birth one was recorded that is destined to shine in the bright galaxy of western cities that will surpass sur-pass a great many Manti has something to give the capitalist for his money invested Her agricultural and mineral wealth is so well known that it has become proverbial especially is this so agriculturally speaking Where skillcan join hands with nature coupled with that great lubricator capital there is wealth enough in the soil that surrounds Manti to support a population of over fifty thousand The most flattering inducements are held out to manufacturers and in fact all branches of industries During the progress pro-gress of a boom men are disposed to allow their zeal to blind their better judgment and sacrifice a large capital at tho altar of a papers speculations In many towns this idea is made manifest Look at Kansas City Los Angeles and all our great boom towns of the west TaiS is of cojrje due to tha lak l of n lot lr 1l alvaatiijj ApIy the same capital to Manti and there results a ready remuneration corelated with an increase of the avenues of trade on every hand Men of enterprise and capital are now casting their eyes on Mantis great resources and wealth and it is the development of these that warrant the boom that like a flood is about to engulf them The rapid approach of the Rio Grande Western is like tho distant hum of industry and the officials of this road have promised to eat Christmas dinner in Mantiit is whispered that extensive preparations are in progress to make it a genuine day of rejoicing when they do get there Although the population credited to Manti at tho last census is 2500 it is a conceded fact that it is at least 3000 and the resources are unfolding almost daily in and around Manti of an agricultural and mineral nature thaI are positively surprising The recent coal findings within four miles of Manti are such as will lift Manti to the grade of Utahs fourth city Provo being third the coal being of the same quality and probably same vein as the Pleasant valley coal Mantis mineral resources are only just opening the best claim being the Alexander mine situated a few miles north and west of Manti which is working nine men at present and as soon as railroad communication is effected will increase tho force many fold foldThe The sandstone of Sanpete county is unexcelled in its beauty and varied hues which will furnish the best red or give one their brown stone fronts which can bo retouched and ornamented with a beautiful white such as of which the temple is built All this can be supplemented by beautiful marble stops mantles and columns all of which can be found in and around Vlanti The soil is such that adobe or brick can be made of the best quality Especially is this so with adobes many people locating theIr building spots and with the excavation soil for the cellar or foundation make the adobes for the house The proliferous conditions condi-tions of the soil in Sanpeto county are without doubt unexcelled in the territory and as soon as the railroad makes its advent in and through the county there will be such an awakening in the minds of the public that it will amazing The wool interests of Sanpeto are of no mean order and those which are supposed to belong to Nephi will be transferred to Manti Nephi being the first shipping point from Sanpete and Sevier counties their own county furnishing but a small proportion of this important industry The lumber interests in this southern country are only awakening up by the rumbling of railroad rumors and just requires actual railroad communication to form a great shipping industry Mr David James of Salt Lake is constructing a system of water works that will fill the only remaining condition to place Manti in the front rank with any town in the territory The water although being plentiful for agricultural purposes was very poor for culinary and domestic uses hence was a black eye II to her prosperity This now will happily be relegated to the past Manti has a savings bank fully equipped in the latest style and presents a very handsome appearance both internal and external It is on a good solid paying basis and the stock is not to be bought at this early date although the institution is only one month old Manti is on the high road to prosperity and fortunate are those who get located there prior to tho boom that is surely coming with the two railroad srunning into
