| Show ABDUCTING A GIRL A Negro Burglar Carries Off a FifteenYear Old Girl i Pittsbnrgr Special THE HERALD Examiner Dispatch I PITTSBURG Nov SAfer a long and hard chase the police ran down yesterday a desperate negro who after robbing a house had attempted to abduct a fif teonye rold girl The negro Wade West went to the dwelling Adam Smoltz near the cemetery ceme-tery where he searched for valuables and found t watch and some money In his wanderings through the house he entered the room where Smelts daughter Irene was sleeping with Lizzie Krebbs He siezed an overcoat from another room throwing it over the sleepinggirl and carefully i care-fully carried her down stairs and out of the house before she awakened The cool ail roused the girl although her bead was covered cov-ered Her terror when she found herself being carried away may be imagined It was increased tenfold when she tore the coat away from her face and saw her abductor ab-ductor was a repulsivelooking negro Help help help she screamed negro burglar ordered her to keep her mouth shed or he would kill her but this only increased her fright She screamed more and changed her cry to Murder murder Then her captor started to run still having her in his arms Smeltz and his wife recognizing their daughters voice sprang out of bed to a window justin time tosee her being carried away They sped down stairs and gave chase As the negro could not run fast with the struggling girl they gained on him rapidly Smeltz bad l revolver but was afraid to shoot for fear of killing his daughter He continued in pursuit spurred on by his anxiety for his child Soon the fleeing kidnapper saw he must either drop the girl or attack her father He decided on the former course Casting her to one side as if she were an inaminate object ho disappeared in the darkness The girls head struck a stone and was badly cut When her father came up she was unconscious and blood was flowing from the wound Smeltz was then forced to sLip in order to give assistance to his injured daughter and the desperado escaped |
