THE RECENT exploit of a Brooklyn detective detec-tive is suggestive of the possibility of bringing bring-ing mesmerism into such use that it will be valuable and not merely a mystifying science or whatever else it may be called A man was arrested for burglary and while it was known that he was guilty his conviction was out of the question unless certain missing links in the evidencecould be supplied Finally the detective put the fellow under the mesmeric influence when the burglar made a clean breast of his crime and the officers were able to send him up in good style I this practice were to become the rule and government should employ a corps of detectives with such mesmeric power that they could extort ex-tort confessions from criminals at will there would be mighty little encouragement encourage-ment to n man to set out on a career of crime
