Show t r 1 GOING WRONG I The quickest way for tile workingmen working-men to get into7 popular 3rsfepnte I lose the respect and sympathy of the American people is to join hands with the Socialists and number themselves with the throwers of bombs fhedis organizers < 4 < society and those who mflkewar + tfpon government Because they are not in the offices The tendency tend-ency of the labor organizations during late years has been towards anarchy and disorder When a Socialist becomes more reckless than his fellows and commits com-mits some overt act which results in his punishment by the law he is certain to fjnd yni ialhi ers jimong the So = called workingmeus societies It will 1 1e remembered re-membered that the great organization known as the Knights of Labor at its convention in Richmond last fall expressed sympaUfy1 for the seven Chicago Chi-cago Anarchists who are under sentence of death for their participation in the Haymarket tragedy It is said that prominencAnarchists are at the head 9f soma of the district assemblies of Knights and it js known that Socialists figureJargely l in membership of city assemblies It will be seen by reference refer-ence to a telegram in this issue of THE HERALD that the Anarchists have captured cap-tured the trades associations of that city electing their own officers and assuming control of the organizations It is because of this tendency co Socialism So-cialism and this well understood sym j jhy with the destructive doctrines of tn e levelers that the labor societies are looked upon with so much suspicion sus-picion and distrust by the American Amer-ican people It is not because the Americans ate I lacking in I sympathy forithe poor and the distressed dis-tressed or in wanting a spirit of fairness fair-ness or justice The Americans are famed for t eir kindness to ihe poor and consideration for the oPPe set hour h-our courts are careful to protect the workingman in all his lights and guard him against the encroachments and oppressions op-pressions of the capitalist and our laws know no difference between the millionaire mil-lionaire and the man who grooms his horses While thelAmerican peopletheir laws sentiments and institutions all contemplate equality and justice among the inhabitants it must be confessed that there is a widespread feeling of fear and distrust throughout the country coun-try inspired bythe too apparent fraternizing fra-ternizing of workingmen with the Socialists and Anarchists There is neither sympathy with nor respect for I the doctrines of these disorganizers in America and their apostles and advocates advo-cates need expect no encouragement or favor from Americans If the labor societies unite with the Anarchists they must expect the frowns of the law abiding and mdustriens if Socialists get control of the workingmens associations asso-ciations then such associations will necessarily be regarded by the public as dangerous organizations threatening to society and demanding close watch ng It is annoying to the true friends of laborers to see the latter surrender sur-render themselves into the hands of the Anarchists and thus put themselves in a position where they cannot be I aided but must be held off as dangerous persons If he workingmen were wise if they had intelligent men for leaders they would cut entirely loose from Socialists and declare themselves the champions of peace of right of justice and good order and would by words and conduct con-duct show themselves to be good citizens citi-zens in harmony with the spirit and institutions of the country and thus compel the popular respect and consideration sideration which are now denied them because of their associations |
