Show INDIANA POLITICS 1 j Counting tin i Eobertson i as LieutGovernor r THE WRECKED ELIZABETHS JIg urns iloreCroqbedne 5 Fcac for Baldwin Wheat from Call 9 1Etc > Tie Hoosler Muddle INDIANAPOLIS January 10 The coming com-ing week will be qf intense interest in the Indiana Legislature On Friday Speaker Sayre of the House of Representatives Repre-sentatives sent message to the Senate informing that body that in the morn he would proceed to canvass and declare de-clare the result of the voteat the November No-vember election for LieutenantGover nor the law Requiring this to be done in presence of the two Houses The Senate received the message laid it upon up-on the table and adjourned until Monday Mon-day To morrow morning R publican publi-can members of the Senate nineteen in number will appear in the hall of the House where they will be recognized as the Senate the vote for LieutenantGovernor will be canvassed can-vassed and announced and Colonel Robertson sworn inl after which he will preside over the joint assemblage It is understood that be will subsequently find means to offldlally inform the Senate Sen-ate thathe has been sworn into office and is ready to take his seat as presiding presid-ing officer of that body I Republicans claim to be acting in strict conformity withlaw and insist that the claim of Senator Smith to the presidency of the Senate will be utterly void after such notice If Colonel Robertsons claim to preside over the Senate is conceded con-ceded by the Democratic majority when he presents himself the contest con-test over the LieutenantGovernor ship will of course be ended if his claim is denied which is among the probabilities it has not yetbeen made public what steps will be taken In reference to the Senatorship Republicans Republi-cans are still united in their support of Harrison Governor Gray has withdrawn with-drawn in interestof Mr Turpie and the Democrats are not yet united upon any candidate Mr Holm an is still here and is pushing his candidacy Mr Brynum has gone to Washington leaving his interests in charge of his friends The hallways and corridors of the Capitol were thronged by an immense crowd of people this morning anxious to witness possible developments in the political struggle now in progress All interest centred in the House where the galleries were densely packed while prominent politicians were present and locatedin available positions for giving advice and assistance to their friends on the floor Directly after prayer the doorkeeper stepped to the front of the Speaker and announced the presence of the Senate consisting of nineteen Republican members of that body Kellison Democrat arose and called Mr Speaker but was not recognized re-cognized < i Speaker Sayre immediately announced an-nounced that the business of the convention con-vention was to canvass the vote for LieutenantGovernor Other Democratic members also claimed the Speakers attention but all were refused recognition The reading of the returns consumed half an hour and at its close while the clerk was making his computations Jewett Democrat addressed the Speaker but was told that nothing would be in order until the canvass was completed Robertson was declared elected by a majority of 3323 votes He was declined de-clined elected and was sworn in by a justice of the Superior Court Robertson Robert-son at once took the gavel and proceeded pro-ceeded to read his address Democrats attempted to be heard and Jewett Democrat exclaimed Mr SpeakerWe do not recognize the legality of this joint convention pointing to the Republican senators when there is no representation of the Senate except the fag end of that body We protest against this usurpation of power this disorganization and overturning turning of precedent and law At the conclusion of Robertsons address he declared the joint conven tion adjourned to reassemble in the same hall on Wednesday 19th to vote for United States Senator Speaker Sayre then took possession of the gavel and on motion of Gardner the House adjourned |
