Show THE LAST SAD RITES The Remains of Grandma Higgrin botham Laid to Best I On Saturday evening last about 6 30 i oclock Grandma Higgobotham died after a short illness at the residence of her son in law Hon D H Peery in this city The funeral services were conducted from Mayor Peerys residence resi-dence yesterday afternoon a large umber of the friends and relative of the deceased and her family being present pres-ent The coffin lay in the southwestroom of the Peery mansion and the immediate imme-diate relatives of the deceased sat in a circle around it Mayor Peery and wife and Mr Simon I Higgmbotham and wife occupying positions near the head of the coffin and Mrs C 0 Richards Mr and Mrs P D Higginbotham sitting sit-ting on the sides the other relatives completing the circle The coffin was a magnificent one and was tastefully covered with flowers BiahppMcQuarneof the Second Ward I conducted tne services which were opened by Tabernacle choir sing ing the hymn Sister thoU wast mild and lovely Gentle as the summer breeze Elder Joseph Hall delivered a touching touch-ing prayer which was followed by the choir singing Creation speaks with awful voice Hand Tis a universal groan etc Elder D1 Stuart was the first speaker He eugolized the life of the deceased and paid gowing tributes to her life and memory closing by uttering inconsonance in-consonance with the departed her last i prayer May God have mercy upon I me ana my children John C Thompson a brotherinlaw of the deceased next addressed hImself to the assembled audience recounting some of the leading characteristics of the ladys life and relating in brief her history Mr TLomson was followed by Prof T B Lewis who in a brief but eloquent address poured out the feeling feel-ing of his soul in touching tributes to the life labor and influence of the most estimable lady He said that her life had been one that might be emu lated with ad ant age by all her influence in-fluence had been mild but determined and her manner had always earned the conviction of a strong soul earnes ly striving to accomplish good to all whom fortune threw within the radius of herS her-S Jcietv Apostle F D Richards was the next speaker His remarks were but brief and elated principally to her standing in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latte day SaInts ud to a wish that she had bIt recently expressed to him in relation rela-tion to her children Each of the speakers I speak-ers paid glowing tribute to the memory of the departed dead and one could not I i listen to a recital of her history without with-out being seriously impressed with the I thought that the world would be better were there more such noble souls j mingled with the mortals here I Bishop McQuarry made a few closing remarks and the large audience began to view the remains Those who sat in the room in which the services were held passed out at the I front door of the house and those who were in the dining room east and those m the north part of the house passed through the room from the east and out of the house 0 After the immense crowd had viewed the corpse the coffin was placed in the j hearse nail conveyed to the city cemetery I ceme-tery where the remains were deposited i in their last long resting place The j mneral cortege was a very larga one I I and testifiedas do all of her friends and acquaintances to the esteem m which the lady was held br all her mends I Deceased was born in Tazewell County Virginia March 12 IhOS and I joined the Church of Jesus Christ of t Latterdij Saints in 1810 being driven with
