Show FLOWING WELLS To the Editor of TnE HERALD In this mornings HERALD under the caption cap-tion Test I your suggestion to try and obtain flowing water on the east side of the city is a good one and should I think have been tried long ago There are several fine wells of this kind now doing very excellent work in the First precinct and with a desire de-sire to obtain the views of others on the subject some time ago I picked up City Councilor Smith in my buggy and showed him where I believed an abundance of the best of water could be had at a nominal cost After looking over the ground which lies within the corner of Seventh South and Eighth streets he felt convinced con-vinced that my conjectures were wel grounded Furthermore I took Professor Newell hydraulic engineer of the United States Geological Survey in hand and he also assured me that he believed water could be obtained in the place indicated in large quantities at a minimum cost He cited a case in point where a town in Massachusetts Mas-sachusetts put down a number of six inch pipes less than one hundred feet deep and within one hundred feet of each other and obtained an ample supply of pure crystal water He had no doubt but similar results would follow the sinking of pipe wells at the place above indicated I am happy to state that Mayor Armstrong strong has promised to put down a good sized pipe on the corner of Seventh South and Eighth streets just as soon as suitable machinery can be obtained It is I think a mistaken idea that some entertain that the water in the wells on the west side of the city comes from the river Jordan I am quite confident that all the subterranean percolations and streams like those on the surface come from the mountains AM M |
