Show TH B Y ACADEMY The Opeain Ceremonies of This Educational Institution The opening ceremonies of the first term of the fourteenth year at the Brigham Young academy which took place on Monday Mon-day the 5th lust were published though perhaps in the midst of the election excite meat were not so fully considered as would otherwise have been the case The academy circular issued some time ago contains the calendar names of trustees trus-tees and other officers of the institution with a general sketch of the rules of order classifications and curriculum of the sev i eral departments which must convince the most skeptical that this is a good place for the moral and intellectual training of young people There is one feature of the academy that may differ somewhat from other similar institutions and that is the rules of order as published are strictly strict-ly enforced not particularly by the austere commands of the principal or I teachers but by c peculiar methods adopted the students soon learn to regard their teachers as their best friends and amore a-more suggestion of propriety or the proper deportment of young men and young ladies emanating from Professor Maeser is accepted copied gospel truth by the students andy and-y following and living up to these rules of conduct both in and out of school the students dents become exemplary members of society I ciety The students soon learn to regard the principal and teachers with a dpgree of reverance and not only obey the somewhat strict rules themselves but in a measure enforce the same with their Associates both in and out of school It is true some not familiar with the academy have regarded re-garded the teachers and students as proud and haughty exclusive and unsociable un-sociable but let any who think so try the experiment once and go there I when it would not be regarded as an intrusion I in-trusion and watch the procedure for an hour or two Any person who will try the experiment even though deaf and dumb cannot help but feel something of the good influence that prevails there The good resulting from the proper training of young people at the academy is not confined to that institution by any means but has permeated all classes so that now we have a exemplary a class of young men and young ladies in Provo as can be found elsewhere in Utah or any other territory notwithstanding the horrible I hor-rible yarns published occasionally in the Netts to the contrarybut to return to my subject The circular of the B Y academy also contains a brief historical sketch of the institution in-stitution which gives full credit to the illustrious lustrious founder and intimating the academy has had no endowment outside of the little real estate in this city concludes in the folio wing words Ithas therefore had to hold up its head under difficulties Still being united with each other and with the board of trustees and looking upon their labors in the light of a mission the teachers have bravely met and successfully overcome every obstacle so that the academy stands today free of debt and < ready to enter upon a new eraof prosperity I and usefulness PROVO Aug 10 1889 |
