make the first lonz run of the season and will it be to Ogden Provo or Grantsville Where are the uniforms the Cycling club adopted Is it modesty or economy which is keeping them out of sight Charles G Koop claims the honor of being the first man to ride a bicycle in the city of Brooklyn N Y The date of his first appearance is November 51S78 Which of the lake resorts will build a good track so that wheelmen can get up a big meet bringing wheelmen here from all points between Denver and San Francisco to compete in the races Mr J W Leavitt of Cleveland Ohio recently rode for and beat the state 24hour record held by E J Douhet of the same city Douhets record was 190 miles while Leavitt managed to cover 192 1 S miles cyclometer cy-clometer measure Enoch Townsend of Saco Me left Watcrtown Mass at 408 a m Sunday to ride to Portland Me and be accomplished accom-plished the feat at 755 p m The distance is 113 miles and is over some of the sandiest sandi-est roughest aud hilliest roads in the country We are in receipt of a letter from the Bicycling World enclosing a communication relative to the chances of an opening for a bicycle repairer in Salt Lake As one of our dealers has engaged a repairer who commences work this week there will likely be no opening for some time to come No bicycles received during the week except ex-cept one Columbia Safety by Gushing though Evans is expecting ten low grade wheels and Jensen a number of Victor Safeties Some of the wheels on the road for Evans are to fill his orders as far back as February last which indicates that manufacturers are about six months behind be-hind orders One evening as several of tho S B C were discussing the qualifications of cer tain applicants for membership the guileless guile-less Schultz asked What do you think of a man who would bury two children in the morning and go to a picnic in the afternoon after-noon The indignant secretary immediately immedi-ately wanted to know who could bo guilty of such heartless conduct and when he earned that it was an undertaker his collapse col-lapse was sudden and complete Bi World All the cyclists of this city are rejoicing over the arrest and conviction of a road hog by name of Louis Whittenberg who attempted to run over a member of the Cycle club two weeks ago On the night in question the club was riding out Pine street in twos on the right hand side of the street and when near Thirtysecond I street encountered said party who maliciously malici-ously ran into B Pratte the shafts striking strik-ing him in the breast The wheel was dragged for some distance but not damaged dam-aged As soon as the riders had recovered from their surprise they upon suggestion of A L Jordan gave chase and captured the offender before he had gone three blocks and held him until the arrival of the police who were summoned from the station near by and came post haste The I trial was set for Monday but was postponed post-poned until Wednesday when both sides appeared being represented by counsel W Brown made the charge on behalf of tho wheelman and Judge Cady after hearing hear-ing the feeble defence that the cyclists were riding six abreast found defendant guilty fining him 10 and coats with the hifin f remark that the fine would bo doubled at the next offence The road hog tried hard to get Mayor Noonan to remit the fine but it was of no use as Sloan Tracy had posted the executive on the merits of the case Mr Brown deserves and should receive the thanks of all wheelmen for his gratuitous services in this case the result of which it is hoped will teach drivers to let wheelmen severely alone in future St Louis Correspondent Bl World M R Evans has engaged a competent cycle repairer who will be at work this week Salt Lace has needed aa repairer for some time and wheelmen are congratulating congratulat-ing themselves and each other over the fact that their needs will be supplied No bicycle will do satisfactory service unless it is kept in good repair and the average rider either has not the time or the ability to keep his bicvcle always in first class shape Vheels wi 1 get out of tires tires become loose brakes be defective or something of minor importance be wrong all of which are annoying to the rider but at the s ins time do not interfere with his riding Some riders overlook these little things for months and sometimes in attempting to remedy the evil themselves spend a great deal of time without improving if they do not Increase the trouble and finall attributing attribut-ing it to some defect in manufacture are dissatisfied with their wheels and in consequence sequence lose interest and take no pleasure pleas-ure in cycling The actual wear on a bicycle cycle is very slight and with the adjustable adjusta-ble bearings of all high grade machines there is no reason why a wheel should not be kept in perfect condition for years providing pro-viding receives proper care There should be > no loose tires spokes bolts or nuts and the trouble of preventing them is very little lit-tle and if attended to at the proper time can be done without assistance from a repairer re-pairer but these are often neglected and wheels are ridden in this condition for months besides having broken spokes or some part of the frame bent the machine rattled and is not doing good work The remedy is to send your wheel to some competent com-petent repairer have it overhauled and it will be returned to you in as good shape as you received it from the factory Keep your wheel in good condition on the same principle that you keep your piano in tune you can have no real enjoyment from either without observing these rules |
