Show SULLIVANS CASE The San Francisco Bulletin announces that SULLIVAN and KILRAIN have been taken back to Mississippi to be tried on the criminal charge of prize fighting in that state It further announces that the plucky governor has hunted up the fugitives I fugi-tives and sent them before the courts for trial Further along the same article I would have us know that SULLIVAN did not know he was fighting in Mississippi but I supposed the contest was going on in Louisiana in which latter state there is I also a law against prize fighting and that his apology therefore amounts to nothing he simply did not know in which of the two states he was violating the law The fact that prize fighting is contrary to the civilized sentiment of the age a sentiment sen-timent which has crystalized into law in almost al-most every place where laws are made causes us to receive such statements as those of the Bulletin quite gratefully on their face But the pleasure of reading them is clouded by the unwelcome appearance appear-ance of a few inaccuracies For instance SuLLIvAN and KILRAIN have not been taken back to Mississippi to be tried nor have they been taken elsewhere for trial or for any other purpose there is no law in Louisiana Lou-isiana against prize fighting and SULLI VANS apology should therefore amount to what it is worth it is not a question of not knowing in which state he was violating the law if he supposed he was not doing so in either The Bostonian slugger himself is the only one taken to Mississippi for trial and it is I a two to one bet that he will not be convicted con-victed The average Mississippian is not greatly opposed to fighting and out of I I twelve men selected from the populace surely there will be at least one who will stay with the big un itis a more doubtful doubt-ful question if fter can be found on the panel one conviction |
