Show ON A SWEET SUBJECT A Few Facts for Those Interested In Homo Manufactures and Enterprises The following circular bearing the signatures signa-tures of Messrs Elias Morris Henry Wallace Wal-lace F A Mitchell Daniel Stewart John W Snell and Arthur Stayner is being circulated cir-culated On the 12th inst a meeting was held at the Fourteenth ward assembly hall of this city at which were presented facts and figures directly bearing upon the feasibility of producing sugar in this territory Prominent amongst the very valuable information formation brought forward were the facts that east of us in Kansas a fine success is being made in producing sugar from sorghum at a good profit and west of us in California good well refined sugar is being made from beets at a good profit The principle of diffusion being used in both cases and in California the principle of refining fining the sugar while in process of manufacture manu-facture from the juice is a very valuable improvement im-provement In figures tho cases may be set down as follows SORGHUM A ton of cane Trill produce 100 pounds sugar t 0 00 15 gallons syrup 4 50 2 bushels seed 1 09 811 50 A ton of cane will cost 3 00 Working up and refining 3 00 8600 Profit 5 50 BEETS 1 ton of beets will produce 200 pounds of sugar S12 00 Pulp TO ala to 1 ton of beets will cost 54 00 Working and refining 300 8 7 00 Profit S 5 TO It has already been practically demonstrated demon-strated that sugar can be made from sorghum sorg-hum grown in this territory and there is now little doubt that the beets raised in selected lected localities will work up as readily as those raised in California and as the same processes and the same machinery will work both sorghum and beets it is clearly manifest that a very profitable business cane can-e inaugurated which will save a million dollars annually employ a great number of hands and do this at a handsome profit to the investors It is proposed to form a company with a capital stock of 250000 which will pay for a complete plant for manufacturing and re flag sugar and furnish working capital to run it tho plant to be of sufficient capacity to work up 150 tons of cane or beets each twentyfour hours Skilful and competent help has been proffered from both east and west to erect a factory and run it for a season to insure success until skilled operators can be taught here The undersigned were by said meeting appointed a committee to solicit subscriptions subscrip-tions for the purpose of inaugurating a company with the view that if sufficient support be promised collections will be made and the industry established TUB COST OP stasis Mr Arthur Stayner hands us the following follow-ing The cost of raising and making up a ton of beets in Germany is 450 for the beets and 250 for the manufacturing into aw sugar A German ton as also a Prencn ton is 2200 pounds From tais ton the German manufacturers get an average of 300 pounds raw sugar about 270 pounds to our American ton Thus for 7 they get 300 pounds of sugar costing 233 per 100 pounds Upon a 2200 pounds ton of beets the government charges a tax of 423 or about 5143 per 100 pounds of sugar making the total cost 375 The average price of sugar in Germany is 497 so the manufacturer manufac-turer realizes 122 per 100 pounds of sugar which means 380 per 2200 pounds ton worked With sIJ profit the German manufacturers are well satisfied and new capital is being invested there in the business busi-ness up to this time When the German made sugar is shipped abroad the government govern-ment gives a drawback of 193 per 100 pounds > which leaves an additional profit to the manufacturer of SOc per 100 pounds making his profits S17S or 545 to the ton of beets worked |
