Show COON WAS NOT APPOINTED The Assistant Secretary of the Treasury i Not Anybodys Man WASHINGTON March 15 Secretary Windoms attention was today called to the newspaper statement that he was overruled over-ruled in the matter of the appointment of Assistant Secretary Bachellor The story was that ho had tendered the place to Coon and the latter accepted and the appointment appoint-ment of Bachellor was in direct oyposition t his wishes I further stated that Bachel lor was Plats man and would have control con-trol of the treasury patronage Mr Windom said he did not usually notice newspaper criticisms but this is so unfair and misleading that he did not like to let it go unchallenged As a matter of fact he said th president had referred this appointment t him and he had acted in accordance ac-cordance with his recommendation in appointing ap-pointing Batchellor I was true that Coon had been considered consid-ered in connection with this office It was never tendered him however and conso quently he had not accepted it The appointment ap-pointment of Batchellor was made after careful considerationand was in no sense a reflection upon Coon Secretary Windom said it was absurd to say that any assistant secretary would have control of the treasury appointments That was a matter entirely in the hands of the president and himself and was not likely to be relegated to any other official The secretary said so far as he knew Batchellor could not be considered as any bodys man |
