Show THE UNORGANIZED TRADES cooking to a Plasterers Union and a Laborers Union TJe call for a meeting of the unorganized trades of this city drew quite a crowd to the Federal court room last evening Tho first matter undertaken was the organization or-ganization of a plasterers union It looked a hopeless task at first but after a little encouraging en-couraging talk there were found several in the room who were willing to take hold of the matter and push it forward From among these a committee consisting of Messrs Lyons Richards and McDonald was appointed to solicit cooperatIon from their fellowtradesmen This committee will report at the next meeting An invitation was then extended to the laboringmen to organize a union A call was made for a committee but there was no response at first William Doxey was called for and made a ready reply He began by stating that he was not used to public speaking but before be-fore he sat down he proved himself to be a labor orator of no mean aptitude Ho said he had had twentvseven years experience M trades unions and in that time he had ob s the advantages of organization note to th not-e workingman alone but to his family as well He had seen widows who but for the forsight of their husbands joining some union would have been destitute come forward and received from the treasury treas-ury enough to save them from the poorhouse poor-house and from want He quoted several instances where labor i ing men through the help of their unions had risen to eminence mentioning particu larly a stonecutter who at one time labored at his side and who is now a member of the English house of commons At the conclusion of Doxeys speech there was found to be a change in the sentiment sen-timent of the meeting and no trouble was experienced in getting a committee to solicit members for the proposed laborers union Messrs Wiseman Martin Hurd I and Qunts were appointed as such committee com-mittee Magnus Olson a blacksmith stated that he would try to find two others of his craft to work with him in an attempt to organize a blacksmiths union At this point the meeting adjourned |
