Show Jc pifii(8ir By DAVE VVIGHAM CLEARFIELD The Fal-.cons Fal-.cons of Clearfield don't have any time left to lick their wounds over their loss because be-cause this Friday they get down to the nitty gritty with their first region game of the season. DAVIS CAME into town last week and when the dust had settled the Darts had handed Clearfield their first loss of the young season. Prior to that lews the Falcons had knocked off both Viewmont and Bountiful Boun-tiful in practice encounters. One win or loss doesn't make a season and last week's loss is by no means any indication indica-tion of the type of club Clearfield Clear-field has. It had been a long time since Clearfield faced the double wing of Davis and that by itself is good for a couple of scores, which is what the Darts winning margin was. ANYONE WHO can beat Bountiful on their own field has a super football club and Clearfield is in that category. "As luck would have it the Falcons get a tough game in their league opener when they host the pre-season favorite Bonneville club this Friday. Many still feel that the Lakers are the top club in the state this season. THIS M ATCHUP figures to be the battle of the running of Clearfield against the passing attack of Bonneville. Leading the running game for the Falcons Fal-cons is Freddie Cook who has drawn praise from every opposing coach for his power style of running. Passing for the Lakers is their three year quarterback Cory Sylvester. At 6'5" the Bonneville passer is considered consi-dered the best college prospect in the state , he won all kinds of awards at camps this summer. BOTH CLUBS have other offensive weapons. Senior Tom Land is the main man in the Laker running game while Todd Boyer is strong on both pass receiving and running from his slot back position. Quarterback Milt Hill will throw the ball when needed, and he is more than good at it, while Shane Opensaw will do just about anything for the Falcons. Fal-cons. CLEARFIELD IS reported to have one of their best clubs in recent history, at least since Brent Hancock took over the program and their pre-season efforts would certainly prove this point. The Falcons have played exciting ex-citing football with a tough group of defensive stares. Brad Wilkes, Eric Naylor, Mark Carter, Kevin Porter and the rest of the troops will have to come up with a superior effort this week to beat the Bonneville team. SHANE Openshaw will lead the pack in the defensive secondary that will be tested this week. Shane came up with four pass interceptions a week ago and could possibly get the same opportunity this week. Clearfield must control the ball and keep it away from the potent Laker offense and that means running the ball with Mr. Cook. Fred has been getting get-ting excellent blocking from his frontline people and they need the sustained drives this time. BONNEVILLE coach Thorn Budge had predicted the race for the region crown would be between four teams, his and Clearfield were two of those clubs so he notes that this game could go a long way in determining the region championship. cham-pionship. Coach Hancock realizes that all the clubs in the league are tough and he would . love a win in this battle. |
