Show By DAVE WIGHAM LAYTON All of a sudden people around the state are starting to take the Lancer football team seriously. Main reason is their big win last week over previously unbeaten un-beaten Brighton 23-21. UP UNTIL that win over the Bengals this local club was said to be down this season. After all they had lost their two games up until that time. Brighton had knocked off Skyline Sky-line which is always tough, so many of Salt Lake City figured this one to be an easy victory for Brighton. Now the Lancers have confidence con-fidence going in their league opener this week with Roy. Now the Royals realize that they just might have a hornets nest to contend with. ROY MEANWHILE was going the opposite route. They opened up the year with a rare win over Bountiful, they they won again the following week but last Friday they were knocked off 7-6 by Olympus. Both clubs scored one touchdown touch-down but the Roy club elected to go for two points and failed. If you're big on comparing scores of these two opponents then figure this out. Brighton beat Olympus 45-0. Olympus beat Roy while Layton beat Brighton. Let's not consider these scores. BOTH OF these clubs have new quarterbacks in their backfield. Senior Todd Vought is calling the plays for Layton and is getting better with experience, he didn't see much action behind Mark Vigil last season. Roy's coach Ernis Jacklin looks to his son, Junior Wade, to lead his troops, at least this way the coach can yell at his quarterback in any tone he wants to and get away with it. ROY LIKES to put the ball up in the air, and Jacklin has a fine arm, but they also have a fine running attack to compliment compli-ment it. Jacklin has excellent speed which gives them an added dimension on offense. Ken Huddleston is the leading runner on the club while Brad McCaulley is their main threat to catch the football. One thing that impressed Bountiful Coach Paul Waite about this Roy team was their size especially on the defensive defen-sive front line. "They are big and quick" noted Waite. LAYTON meanwhile likes to play ball control offense with their running backs getting get-ting the bulk of the calls. Brian Murray and Keith Wilson are both fine backs and are getting tougher to bring down with each carry. Bountiful may have had trouble with the size of Roy but size is another thing that never seems to be lacking in a Layton football team. Lance Bright- shue, James Suitt, Steve Rench, and Rich Ipaktchian will match anyone up front in both size and strencth. THE SECONDARY has been improving also, remember remem-ber all these players are new to varisity ball this season, with John Lynch heading the list having picked off a Brighton pass and returning it twenty yards for a score. These two clubs always seem to battle each other each year with the results usually being close. They are comparable compa-rable to each other in many ways this season with new faces on each side of the line. Layton doesn't like to loose in region play and with their win a week ago they'll be riding high. Look for a Layton win. |
