Show wmrE AlBLACK The Thrilling Narrative Told by Ellen Wallace Colored Judge Speirs gaze yesterday morning upon lifting itself from his HERALD fell upon a buxom frank and decent looking look-ing negro girl Ellen Wallace who with her brother Jes e James had Ijeen hauled in for battering a woman called Mary Ann Loveland who bears a more than doubtful character and who keeps a house in the Eighth Ward generally voted as a nuisance by its neighbors The negro girl ldher story in an easy offhand manner as follows Yes Judge I admit that I allowed my temper to get the better of me but I was very strongly exasperated You see she had been calling me names omitted see Judge Speirs early in the morning when I was in the coal house On the impulse of the moment I throwed a hunkof coal at her door In the evening even-ing me and my brother heard her calling call-ing Mr Bergquist a lot of names and daring him to touch her so we just stepped out to see the row you know very patural as people will When she saw u she commenced to call us names again and dared us to come in and touch her 1 couldnt stand being called such names by a person ol her character so I went in pulled her out of the house and took her tothe ditch on the sidewalk I put herin I admit that but I didnt put her in all over the water wasnt deep enough 1 found that wasnt satisfac lion enbugh Judge so I just slapped her with the fIat of my hand several times and thats all The Judge was evidently in sympathy with the colored lady but he told her dhe could not take the law into her own hands and fined her 15 Her brother was assessed a similar amount for standing stand-ing by and telling his sister to give it to her good she needed it Both amounts were promptly paid |
