Show Agricultural Report WASHINGTON May 8The May report re-port of the Department of Agriculture relates to the progress of spring plowing and to the condition of winter grain meadows and pastures It also reports the prevailing rates of wages of farm labor Spring sowing in proportion for planting is everywhere late Last year at this date it was estimated twothirds were done this year it is scarcely bixtenths The estimated average of a series of years exceeds seventenths Less than half of this workis done in the Eastern States in New York Ohio and Michigan A much larger proportion is finished in the northwest where corn potatoes and other late planted crops are grown in smaller proportion The injury to I the winter wheat crop was greater than appearances u indicated on the 1st of April The roots were killed in the central belt even I worse than was supposed In New York the snow protection was ample except in spots and In Mlclilgau no material injury occurred but in the Ohio and Mississippi valleys the reports of the I condition are much reduced In the I south a slight improvement in the prospect pros-pect has occurred and the average of the i condition in the principal wheatgrowing States is as follows New York 95 Michigan Mich-igan 100 Ohio 59 Kentucky 45 Indiana In-diana 70 Illinois 42 Missouri 60 Kansas 62 The general average is 70 I instead of 77 in April reducing the indicated in-dicated production of winter wheat to about 240000000 bushels The condition condi-tion of rye is also lower than reported in April yet is much better than wheat the average being 86 The average aver-age condition of winter barley is 82 The mowing lands promise a nearly average crop of hay the average of condition con-dition being 92 The pasture look nearly as well condition 90 |
