Ii n Wm D Newsom by trade a painter butat present the proprietor of a small grocery store in the Eleventh Ward was arrested yesterday morning on a complaint from Commissioner McKays court charging him both with polygamy poly-gamy and unlawful cohabitation According Ac-cording to the document on which the arrest wasmade Newsom married a woman named Lucy Deverell on November I No-vember 16th 1883 while his lawful wife was still living and undivorced The examination in the case was commenced commenc-ed at 2 oclock yesterday afternoon at the Commissioners office Mr Varian conducting the prosecution The defendant de-fendant was asked if he had legal counsel but he said no he shouldnt require any The first witnesS was Lizzie Deverell a sister to the alleged second wife who testified as follows I am acquainted with Mr Newsom and his wife I went to their house when I first came here from the old country I was last there on Friday night Mrs Newsom was there Lucy Deverell was not there I went there every other Sunday to visit Mrs New som my sister has been there with me several times I have never given testimony testi-mony in a court before but I understand under-stand the nature of an oath The witness said she had never seen her sister in company with Mr New som she came from England her sister sis-ter was living at Mrs AustiIS she left here and shed not know whereshe lived came that length of time Newsom sat near the witness and engaged in arnest conversation with her for some minutes which the Commissioner at length perceiving interrupted in-terrupted by ordering Newsom to
