Show S SUICIDE I A Genuine Case of Feb de Se In a Main Street Gun Store A genuine excitement was raised on Main Street Friday afternoon About 1 oclock a man entered the gun store of Thomas Carter and asked to see a Colts doubleaction revolver Mr Carter handed the pistol out to the man who examined it a few moments and then asked Mr Carter if he would load it Mr Carter told the man it was contrary to his custom but at the repetition of the request did load and handed it back to the man The party imme diately stepped back from the counter coun-ter and raised the pistol to his head Mr Carter reached forward to grab him at the same time crying hold on 1 hold on I The words were hardly uttered before the man had pulled the trigger and sent a bullet crushing through his head He fell to the floor and did not speak work The blood gushed copiously from the wound and ran on the floor while a large crowd at once gathered on the spot Drs Benedict and Hamilton were in attendance in a few moments but one look convinced both that the attempt at suicide had been eminently inently successful Examination showed that the bullet had gone in afcthfl rirht hftmtVIfi and come out a little over two inches above the left eye The left side of the head and a great deal of the skull was broken by the frightful wound thus made sy a 41calibre bullet The skull up to the middle of the head was broken so great had been the force The man lived for about half an hour but never spoke nor even uttered tered a groan and while life did linger for a time it is almost certain cer-tain all sense of pain had left instantly in-stantly The coroner was soon on the spot and the pockets of the deceased examined ex-amined This examination revealed the fact thai the unfortunate man was a discharged soldier named Judson H Rust He had belonged to Company K Sixth Infantry now I stationed at Fort Douglas of which D M Lea is captain In his pockets pock-ets were found a couple of collar I buttons several faro bank chips and a couple of false teeth He had no money on his person at all I The only reason that can be assigned as-signed for the act is the supposition that he had ruined himself at the faro table and becoming desperate resolved to terminate his career and did so in the awful manner dis cribed He had been advised to leave the town least he should gamble gam-ble away his money but he did not do so It is intimated he did not expect ex-pect to live long The remains were taken to Sexton Sex-ton Taylors officeand there dressed Captain Lee hearing of the event notified Mr Taylor that he would take charge of the remains and have them enterred at the Fort cemetery and it is expected that the services will take place today He was 37 years old and has been in the army since 1SG1 He had a wife who lives at Omaha |
