Show WITH THE SWORD r It seems the Mormons have again offended the ministerial gymnast Dr Talmage or it may be the gentleman gen-tleman has run out of ideas and like the politician fills the vacancy by hammering away at the saints This is a safe thing for the preacher or the statesman te do The Mormons Mor-mons are always good for a half hours banging so that when a speaker runs short of other matter he need not quit talking and acknowledge ac-knowledge a failure but can fill uptime up-time and make the necessary jnoise by denouncing the peculiar people out here in Utah We do not know all that Dr T lmege uttered in his latest gymnastic and linguistic assaults as-saults but presume that he was peculiarly warm and energetic ener-getic in the business The New York Times refers to the sermon editorially and in away a-way which suggests that the pious gentleman fairly outdid himself in vigor and emphasis The reader will get a very correct idea of Mr Talmages discourse by perusing the Times comments The arms and legs of the Rev Mr Tal mage were unusually eloquent last Sunday Sun-day morning He preached a powerful eermon against the Mormons a class of sinners that seam to be providentially supplied for the purpose of enabling eloquent ministers to preach powerful sermons without offending any possible pewholder Mr Talmage insists upon the instant extirpation of the Mormons He asserts that nothing will ever put a stop to the spread of the Mormon heresy except the sword and demandswith a lively recollection of the Piegan campaign that General Phil Sheridan should be put at the head of an army and Bent to Salt Lake on a mission of extermination It is pleasant to think that the world has moved on since certain zealous priests preached the instant luppreaiion of the Weldensian heresy by the sword and urged that General Catinat should be put at the head of an army and cent to exterminate the Wtldeniea Their advice was followed but in spite of the torrents of blood shed by Ontmat the Walden ian heresy flourishes to this day Much as Mormonism may be abhorred by all but its disciples there are few alleged ministers of the gospel today who would coolly urge the extermination of the Mormons by the sword That Christian and statesmanlike statesman-like course is urged by nobody of any note except Mr Talmage aid it could be wished that his legs and arms were endowed with the power of reading 10 that he might learn from history the result re-sult which usually followed an attempt to suppress a beratf by the sword |
