Show wo rrt CITY COUNCIL Proceedings of the City Council Tuesday evening October lGth1833 Mayor Jennings presiding Joseph R Walker by petition asked permission use portion of the street and sidewalk on FourthS Fourth-S Jutb between East and West Temple streets upon which to pile building material fora period of sixty days Granted under the usual restrictions i restric-tions i tionsWalker Walker Bros asked the privilege of using a portion oC the street and sidewalk ar the corner of Ea3t Temple 1 Tem-ple and Third South streets upon I r which to pile building material Jor a period of sixty days Granted under th usual restric tons A communication was presented from G t 1 Ottinger superintendent superintend-ent of the waterworks and chief engineer of the fire department stating that the earliest possible shipment of piping from Dennis Long Co of Louisville Ky for extending the water mains would be in midwinter at a time when it would not be advantageous or practicable prac-ticable for such work and submitted a letter to that effect which he had received from Louisville He also stated that the new fire department system was rapidly getting into good working order that in order to get a more thorough understanding understand-ing of the paid and call system and for the purpose of posting himself in relation thereto he proposed to visit the cities of San Francisco and Denver and asked that he be allowed al-lowed a leave of absence for two or three weeks On motion the communication was received and placed 01 file the purchase of piping for extension of the mains was ordered postponed until spring and the chief engineer was allowed the leave of absence requested Applications for licences to do business as retail liquor dealers for three months at their respective places of business were presented from Peter Tomney and G A Whitehead and granted Moritz Cullen made application appli-cation for license to manufacture malt liquors at their brewery corner of Tenth East and Fifth South streets for three months from the 8th of October 1883 Granted John Reese by petition asked leave to remain at his old stand ou the corner of East Temple and First Eouth streets and carry on his business of selling fruit he having obtained permission from CJunnington Co to maintain his stand against their building Laid on the table subject to callA 7 call-A proposition was submitted from C H Wilcken and B Y Hampton offering to purchase the water right and improvements made and owned by the city iu Dry Canyon at a sum equivalent to the cost thereof the city to allow them a reasonable compensation for extra time and services spent Referred to the committee on irrigation The city watermser su omitted his quarterly reporDshowiug a total expenditure 01 S3 62J8 during that term Y a Referred to the committee on irrigation ir-rigation Alderman Speirs reported a schedule sched-ule of cases tried and disposed of in the police court for the month of September shoving as follows number of cases triel 140 number of cases dismissed 10 cash fines for month t 03740 cash coiections on back fines 34 total cash paid treasurer 867140 labor fines for montn853G10 labor on old fines 310 fines remitted by Mayor 750 fines not paid 850 Referred to the committee on poi ice The committee on streets and alleys to whom was referred the petition of William B Barton and fifty others relating to repairs on Chestnut street recommended that the supervisor of streets be instructed in-structed to cut down knolls and fill low places so as to make a better grade on said street Adopted The committee on police to whim was referred the expense bills incurred in-curred in the Marshals department for September 1883 reported that they bad examined the vouchers and foundthe same correct and recommended recom-mended that the amount 20180 be appropriated Adopted The committee on claims reported that they had carefully examined the bill of Jesse W Fox jun city surveyor amounting to 14880 and found the labor had been regularly authorized and necessary and recommended rec-ommended that the bill be allowed and the amount appropriated A bill of 15 for services of three extra policemen on the 5th Gth and 7th of October was presented and allowed The sum of Si 000 was appropriated appropri-ated to the waternidsters contingent fund to be draWn upon his orders A bill for an ordinance granting a franchise to the Second South Street Cable Tramway company was pre santcd rea nd referred to the committee com-mittee on municipal lawsOn laws-On motion the supervisor was specially instructed to inspect street crossings constructed by citizens in various portions of the city and to see that they are not piled up in a moundlike manner as many have I been in the past Adjourned for one week |
