Show Making Inquiry Manchester N Hr 15The subcommittee = sub-committee of the United States Senate committee on labor and education edu-cation visited the Amoskeag and Manchester companys mills this morning where the process of cloth I making was obtained The committee > com-mittee returned to the Manchester house when the examination of witnesses will be resumed John D Swain superintendent of the Nashua Iron and steel company T D Crowley of the Cooperative Iron company and otherstestified concerning their respective industries indus-tries Father McDonald of Mans Chester disputed the right of a Congressional Con-gressional committee to come into New Hampshire and inquire into the affairs of its people Senator Blair replied that citizens of New Hampshire were citizens of the United States and Congress surely had the power to send its committees commit-tees any where within the United States to gather information needed by either house The committee had no desire for compulsory testimony testi-mony but if he knew of any grievances griev-ances of the working people they would like him to state them Fatlu r McDonald then complained that tenement houses were badly constructed being too hot in summer sum-mer and not properly heated in winter and that supervision was exercised over food supplies by boardinghouse keepers which is often very bad |
