Show Comments On Football Playoffs By PETE FRITCHIE The question arises every year at bowl times; should there be a national playoff to determine the national collegiate football champion? THAT MIGHT be interesting interest-ing fare for millions of fans but that seems to others as yet another step in the over-commercialization over-commercialization of school football. Coaches might find a playoff interesting too. But since the major purpose of colleges is to educate, and since football is, or should be, secondary to that, why com- -mercialize the game any further? ALREADY THERE is astonishment as-tonishment among some that college football players are invariably willing to give up their Christmas holidays and accept a week of hard practice prac-tice to play in a bowl game. I hat shows the attraction of post-season play to players. They and most coaches would probably opt for national playoffs. Christmas and the Christmas holidays never seem to prevent college teams from playing in the bowls. |
