Show By DAVE WIGHAM WOODS CROSS - This week when the Woods Cross basketball team travels to Salt Lake City to battle the Highland club on the Ram floor it will pit a couple of clubs who are trying to find themselves this season. BOTH THE Rams and the Wildcats had tremendous clubs and both of them were ha hard by graduation. At one time last season they were ' biiih ranked number one in their respective classifications. classifica-tions. lhat is all water under the bridge this season though and both clubs need wins this week to get back in the thick ot the region battles. WOODS CROSS was in the game right down to the final period last week in their loss to powerful Bountiful while the Rams lasted until the final second before dropping a one pointer to the West High club. So here we are in week number two with both clubs at 0-1 and both needing that' first league win. The only dilterence in the two is that (Hie lost at home which is almost al-most suicidal in this region. TO BEAT Highland is to beat their world famous press. A Ram club will press all over the court from the opening tipoff till the final buzzer goes off. The Wildcats will need to be able to break the press, not to get the easy baskets but to get into their ol tense. One coach noted "To beat the Highland crew you have to settle down and run your offense when you break the press." lhere is no getting around the fact that the Highland team isn't as talented as it has been in the past years. That really isn't a big put-down put-down either when you con-- con-- sider the type of talent - thai., the Rams have had in past seasons. Coach Larry Maxwell Max-well is one of the most res- peeled coaches in the state and you can be assured that the club is well coached. HIGHLAND got good scoring scor-ing last week from Randy Rawlings who picked up 17 points while senior Brent Maxwell, yes another of the coach's sons, poured in another 15. What about this Wildcat club'.' Just how good are they, or could they be? They certainly cer-tainly have some talent on their club especially in the form of senior Mark Earnshaw, who is really the only returner from a year ago. AGAINST Bountiful last week this likeable senior was almost a one-man wrecking crew as he poured in 22 points despite some top defense on him. Bountiful Coach Mike Hall had nothing but praise for him. "We tried eviivihing. one lime we had three guys around him and he still got off a turnaround jumper which hit nothing but net." Aiding in the effort w as senior Roger Lowe, who will be needed for ballhandlmg duty this week to break the press. Junior Kevin Nitzel played well in scoring 12 against the Braves and will be counted on to help break the press. With these three the Wildcats really have three guards in the lineup, although Earnshaw is a forward. ANOTHER help in breaking the press vill be junior. Wes Johnson who is a good ballhandler. All down the roster the Cats have talent. llns is a big game for both clubs, the winner is back again while the loser has a rough road ahead. |
