Show Vernal Glenda Landon Akhurst family reunion held An Akhurst family reunion was held Sunday at the home of Charles and JoAnne Gentry. Out-of-town members who were here included JoAnne's uncle Clarence and his wife Muriel (Cobs) Akhurst from Watsonville, Cal., and Rich and Debbie (Merrell) Foster. Debbie is the daughter of Norman and Donna Merrell. She and her husband have just moved back from Alaska and will be stationed in Elko, Nevada. A potluck dinner was served that evening to the 40 family members in attendance. at-tendance. One anniversary and several birthdays in March were being commemorated, com-memorated, so a big birthday cake was served which had all those names on it. The family plans to get together again around Labor Day for another reunion. The Vernal 8th Ward senior basketball team was victorious in the regional tournament played last Saturday night at the high school. The four stakes competing were Ashley, Maeser, Vernal, and Meeker, Colorado. The winning team was presented with a new basketball by Ken Tripp, regional athletic director. Their next game will be Friday, March 28 at 7:15 p.m. in the Richards Bldg. BYU campus in the area playoff that weekend in Provo. The members of the team are: Terry Anderson, Calvin Caldwell, Kim Oliverson, Rich Gardiner, Lon Han-dley, Han-dley, David Brown, Gary Monson, Elden Buckalew and Rick Wallace. They are coached by Elden Buckalew. A baby boy was born March 6 to Mike and Sally Phillips. He is their first child and will be named William Michael. He weighed 9 lbs. 5 oz. and is 21 inches long. His grandparents are Porter and Rachel Phillips and Paul and Bonnie Howard, all of Vernal. Great grandparents grand-parents are Merle Oaks, Gladys Phillips and E. W. Belcher all of Vernal. Ver-nal. Mr. and Mrs. Arben Jolley of Provo, formerly of Vernal, were in town Wednesday and Thursday. They visited the Richard Jolley family, took care of some business matters and attended the Beaux Arts Club spring party at the home of David and Trevelene Hall Wednesday night. The three-stake area basketball tournament for varsity Scouts, ages 14 and 15, was held Saturday night at the Junior High school with five teams participating. They were Maeser 1st, 2nd and 3rd wards, Jensen, and Vernal 8th. Vernal 8th was the winning team and Robyn Schaefermeyer is their coach. Mrs. Bea Bennion has been away for two weeks visiting her children. She spent part of the time in Boise, Idaho, with her son David and family. She then came back as far as Brigham City and visited there with her son Enos and family. She returned home to Vernal last Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Batty left Vernal January 10 for a winter vacation in the southeastern states. They visited frequently with their daughter's family, Lynn and Annette Godfrey and four children, in Barnwell, South Carolina. At one time they were snowbound there by a 1'2 inch snowfall which turned to ice, paralyzed traffic, and necessitated closing the schools for 3 days. They spent most of the time on Hilton Head Island off the coast of South Carolina, a beautiful and luxurious resort 100 miles east of Barnwell. Their friends, Roy and Evelyn Showalter, came from Arizona for a ten-day visit with them. During that time the two couples drove to Plains, Georgia, and St. Augustine, Florida, the oldest city in the nation and toured many interesting historic sites and museums. They met Leo and Virginia Hacking in Columbia, South Carolina, had a pleasant visit with them, and report they are well and enjoying their mission. The Battys came home by way of Phoenix, Ariz, and stopped briefly there for a visit with the Showalters and with Letha Hair Christensen, a former resident of Vernal. They returned home Saturday of last week. A family gathering was held at the home of Alma Preece on Sunday in honor of his 91st birthday which will be March 26. He has four living children: Mrs. John (Vena) Starkey and Ralph both of Denver, Mrs. Lawrence (Maryetta) Wardle and Mrs. Dellis (Doris) Morrill of Vernal. He now has 8 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren grand-children and they all visited him during the day. Birthday cake and ice cream were served. His son Ralph was unable to be here but he had visited his father last week. Mrs. Melba Sargent received word of the arrival of a little great granddaughter grand-daughter born to Russell Dean and , Rosemary Timothy in San Diego. She weighed 8 lbs. 3 oz. and will be named Delila. She is also a great granddaughter grand-daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lou Timothy. A guest at the Shirley Slaugh residence the past week was Evelyn's sister, Helen Kirby from Hyde Park. She came for a visit and to assist in the home while Evelyn is recuperating from surgery on her right foot. Evelyn is staff secretary for Moon Lake Electric in Roosevelt and hopes to be able to go back to work soon. Within a few weeks she expects to have a similar operation on her other foot. Ray and Marilyn Hunting and their daughters, Dell Hunting and his daughter Cara, and Cliff and Pam Whitmire all traveled to Lehi to attend the missionary farewell Sunday for RaNae Hunting She is the daughter of Max and Lela Hunting, formerly of Vernal. She has been called to the Missouri St. Louis mission and will enter the Missionary Training Center in Provo on April 10. Mrs. Alta Rust recently enjoyed a 5-day 5-day trip to Mesa. Ariz . to visit her youngest son Marvin and family there. She traveled with her sister and her husband, Richard and Naomi Pond of Salt Lake City. On Saturday they attended at-tended the Mesa Day celebration which included a parade, program, art show, and other events. They drove back to Salt I,ake City on Monday and Alta returned to Vernal Tuesday. Ronald and Christine Hunt have moved into a home in southwest Vernal. Ver-nal. Mr. and Mrs. I.orin Hunt of Manti, Ron's parents, were here over the weekend helping them get relocated there. Tess Siddoway met her daughter and husband, Dorothy and Dave Anderson of Idaho Falls in Salt Lake City last Friday. On Saturday they flew to Arizona for a week's vacation while Dave attended Market Week in Phoenix. They visited Sunday in Sun City with Mr. and Mrs. Albert Koval (Afton I-arsen), also with Mary Ellen Hatch, a daughter of Boyd and Enid Hatch, and with Lloyd and Inez (Pack) Henry. These former Vernal residents showed them the Wrigley mansion, the Japanese gardens, the elegant homes in Scoltsdale, the temple in Mesa and many other interesting sights during their stay in Phoenix. A highlight of the trip for Tess was when the Andersons rented a car and drove to Pima, Arizona, where Tess' great grandfather, W. R. Topples was one of the first settlers. They visited the site of his home and the first post office in Pima which he operated; the location is now marked with n commemorative com-memorative plaque. They also toured the relic hall which displays many pioneer artifacts. Tess returned home last Saturday night. Mrs. Lynn C. (Elaine) Goodrich moved at the first of this week to liiiiinlifnl She will lie living at her sister's home while Beatrice and her husband, Dr. K. Ross Tucker, are serving ser-ving an LDS mission at the Los Angeles Visitors Center. Elaine's daughter, Repn, is staying here at the home of her sisler, Tamara G. Hawkins, to finish the schixil year. After her graduation from junior high school in May, she will join her mot her in Bountiful. Mr. and Mrs. William Weltsleln will be living in the Goodrich home; here. Word wiih received by Dan Price Monday of the death of his mint, Mrs. Grant Carpenter, formerly Merle Williamson, who lived In Monterey, California. She passed away Sunday. |
