Show Union Cougars reach semifinals due to 20-6 win over South Sevier The Union Cougars missed two golden opportunities for six-pointers in the first quarter, but they made up for the failures in the first quarter with touchdowns 'in the second, third and fourth quarters, which enabled them to thump the South Sevier Rams in Monroe, Friday, 20 to 6. The quarterfinal quar-terfinal win by the Cougars will put the Roosevelt crew in the semifinals against the Morgan Trojans. Three runs of about ten yards each by John Brown placed the Cougars one foot away from a touchdown on their first possession of the football in the first quarter. However, an illegal procedure call foiled the Cougars' shot at a touchdown, and a play later the ball was returned to South Sevier. The South Sevier Rams decided that they didn't want the ball as their quarterback's aerial was intercepted by Union's Pat Pike, who returned the ball to the Rams' five yard line. Union was given a second chance at a touchdown touch-down in the first quarter due to the interception by Pike, but the Cougars fumbled the ball on their first play, and South Sevier recovered to end the scoring threat by Union. The score at the end of the first quarter was: Union, 0 and South Sevier, 0. Union refused to let their past mistakes haunt them as they gained the first touchdown in the game with five minutes left in the second quarter when Kary Eldredge darted five yards and into the end zone on an off-tackle play. The extra point kick by Brent Fenn was good, and the score at the end of the second quarter was: Union, 7 and South Sevier, 0. The Cougars used the off-tackle play halfway into the third quarter and once again Union was rewarded with a touchdown as Kary Eldredge exploded for 70 yards and a six-pointer. The extra point kick by Brent Fenn gave Union, a 14 to 0 lead. "There was a big hole and Kary Eldredge slipped by a tackle at the line and he was gone," stated Union coach, Jay Omer. South Sevier fumbled the ball near mid-field in the fourth quarter, and a couple of runs by John Brown placed Union on the 9 yard line. Quarterback, Tracy Nielsen fired a pass to Troy May for a touchdown with six minutes left in the game. The kick by Brent Fenn was ball game. Everyone we took got to play in the game. We made some mistakes, but we came out and made up for the errors," said Jay Omer. "We felt we should have scored the first two times we had the ball. We were very pleased with our defense. We had to stop South Sevier because they have been tough on offense and have been one of the best passing teams in the 2-A class. Our defensive backs, Pat Pike, John Trowbridge, corners and Tracy Dye, Tracy Nielsen, safetys, did the job." Omer added, "The offense looked good. We felt we could run the ball against them and our offensive line got off the ball well. All our backs had a good game, especially John Brown and Kary Eldredge. Eldredge gained over 100 yards and Brown carried the ball for at least 80 yards. We threw the ball well, but some were dropped. We ran the ball about 60 percent of the time and passed about 40 percent." Probable offensive starters for Union in the 2-A semifinal game with Morgan this week are: Tracy Nielsen, quarterback; quar-terback; John Brown, fullback; Kary Eldredge, tailback; Tim Pittman or Tracy Dye, wingback; Cary Horrocks or David Adamson, centers; James Bailey, Frank Winn, or Scott Cox, guards; Travis Smith, Danny Farn-sworth Farn-sworth or Anthon Nelson, tackles; Phillip Johnson, tightend and Troy May, split end. The Cougars will have a second shot at Morgan this week. "It's going to be a good ball game. The team that makes the mistakes will lose the ball game," said Jay Omer.
