Save on dishwashing Does an automatic dishwasher use quit a bit of energy? Yes. In addition to the electricity required to operate its pump, is there usually a booster hot water heating element. An average dishwasher uses 14 gallons of hot water per load; next to heating and cooling your home, heating your water is the second largest energy consumer. To economize, be sure that your dishwasher is full, but not overloaded, before you turn it on. Scrape your dishes before loading. When rinsing is necessary, use cold water. After the final dishwashing rinse, and before the drying cycle begins, a small amount of electricity may be saved if you turn off the dishwasher and open the door, allowing your dishes to air dry. Redding, in his first term, said a "majority (of sheriffs) favor making the office a elective position." The sheriffs are in the process of submitting proposed legislation to the 1977 Utah Legislature to do just that, he said. The legislation was prepared by the Utah Sheriffs' Association. "What are the needs of partisan politics in law wnforcement?" Redding asked. Apparently he can find few. "Law enforcement problems of society are not limited to one party," he pointed out. "The needs of a sheriff should be logical and justified, not politically based." Redding also pointed out that some eligible candidates may be shut out from the political system "because they are unfamiliar with the methods of partisan politics." While that probably isn't a big concern in a lightly populated area such as Box Elder County, it is of greater importance in larger counties such as Weber, Davis and Salt Lake. The present system forces a serious candidate to affiliate with a particular political party, Redding contends, although candidates can run as independents.
