Show PACE THE THUNDERBIRD 24 TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 30, 1986 Opus auditions slated THE FALL FASHION BY ROBBIE REID SUSC's jazz ensemble group, Opus V, is in its fifth year of existence. Opus was founded five years ago by former SUSC music instructor Ron Aden. It consisted of eight to 1 1 singers and a rythym section including keyboards, bass guitar, and drums. The group is directed by Mark Mecham, who plans to expand the group to 16 singers. According to Mecham, Opus V traditionally performs jazz, but they also extend their music from renaissance to contemporary, Broadway, and popular music. "Opus helps our own students become more familiar with different styles of music, "said Mecham. Mecham is in his first year as a music instructor at 5USC. Born in Salt Lake City and raised in Washington D.C., he graduated from the University of Utah and the University of Illinois. Mecham worked with the choir at the University of Texas at Tyler before coming to SUSC. Future plans for Opus include a performance at the freshman assembly, the homecoming jubilee on Oct. 21, a Christmas concert in December, and other performances around the campus and community. Additionally, Opus will go on the road for a concert in Delta, Utah. Auditions for Opus started Monday, Sept. 29, in the late afternoon and Tuesday, Sept. 30, from morning until noon. "Opus is a big commitment time wise," noted Mecham. Auditions are open to anyone interested. "We need all the help we can get." Mecham says he is very enthsiastic about the coming year and has great plans for the choirs here on campus. Anyone interested in singing is welcome to audition. Mecham is interested in attracting majors. If interested in auditioning, contact Mecham at the music department for further information. 1 OFF 20 WITH THIS COUPON Expires October 31, 1986 B.J.'S Apparel 80 W. SUSC is sponsoring a competition for high school students this week, giving students the opportunity to perform works of Shakespeare before professional judges on an authentic Shakespearean stage. "We are concerned with kids in high school getting a proper view of Shakespeare," says Liz Leisek, competition coordinator. "A lot of times Shakespeare is thought of as stuffy. This will help them to get a better understanding." There are eight highly skilled judges who are well trained actors. Additionally, two talent scouts from ABC daytime television will be on campus to scout recruits. Student performances from previous competitions have led to screen tests, but no one from the festival has landed a role yet, said Leisek. scholarships are awarded to seniors Up to eight who take first in their respective categories, but Leisek said that the experience students gain from performing is of equal or greater value. "This gives the kids exposure to a professional atmosphere which if they're going to continue acting they need some knowledge of." Competition takes place on Oct. 3 and 4. Leisek admits that the competition "does wonderful PR work for the school," but she insists that the main purpose of the event is to bring the magic of Shakespeare to an entirely new audience. SUSC full-tuiti- 'Edge' runs at Fiddler's On the Edge, a movie starring Hollywood actor Bruce Dern, will be shown Oct. 2 at the Cedar City Fiddler's III theatre. On the Edge will be shown at 7:15 and 9 p.m. SUSC students with activity cards will be admitted for $1. Regular admission will be charged for all others. |
