Financial aid abuse could affect enrollment BY DAWN DEBUSK Because of the increasing abuse of financial aid programs, the federal government is requiring all financial aid applications be processed to verify need. According to the National Association of Financial Aid, "This may have an impact on the enrollment of your institution." This was a warning given to the member institutions of the NAFA in a letter that dealt with possible adverse effects caused by continued abuses of financial aid by recipients. The verification process separates the abusers from those with a real need for assistance. Director of Financial Aid Jack Cannon said. "The verification process accounts for an increased workload and inevitable delays," said Cannon, "but we feel positive about the efforts of our capable staff to have money ready for students by the beginning of fall quarter," he said. The process has caused many institutions to hire a larger staff and purchase more advanced equipment to handle the burden of processing applications in time to keep the enrollment up at their schools. Through the verification process, the student must provide documentation of his income, household size, taxable wages, other financial support, school expenditures from previous years, and current status. Until the information is satisfactory the office returns the applications to the student. This long process creates "an incredible backlog," said Cannon. There are four types of financial assistance offered which keep the Financial Aid office busy: grants, loans, scholarships and work-stud- y programs. The Pell Grant, the first of the federal financial aid grants, awards $1,004,000 to 120 needy students, says Cannon. According to the The Student Guide: Five Federal Financial Aid "the maximum award for the 1985-8- 6 Programs '86-'8academic year was $2100." This amount is based not only need; but on the cost of education, enrollment status, and length of 7, attendance. There are two types of long-rang- e loans. "One is the National Direct Student Loan which will disburse $25,000 to 200 students at a payback rate of 5 percent," Cannon noted. He continued, "Also, 550 students borrowed more than $600,000 for the (continued on page ST.GEORGES UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE GRENADA WEST INDIES St George's University School of Medicine, with more than 1050 graduates licensed in 33 states, offers a rigorous, program lead.ng 10 me degree of Doctor of Medicine In January 1985, The Journal of the American Medical Association published a report which ranked St Georges numoer one of all major foreign medical schools in the initial pass rate on the ECFMG Exam 70 medical schools in the United States have accepted over 630 St George's students with advanced standing St Georges has received probationary approval to conduct clinical clerkships in New Jersey subject to regulations of the State Board of Examiners A Loan Program for Entering Students has been instituted for a limited number of qualified applicants f:cr information, please contact the Office of Admissions St. George's University School of Medicine f The Foreign Medicai School Services Corporation One East Mam Street.
