Show LAST OF "THE OLD DEFENDERS." Death of Mrs. Sands, to Whom Baltimore will Give Military Honors; Baltimore, Md Aug. 7. Mrs. Elizabeth Eliza-beth Sands, probably the oldest person in Baltimore, and the last of tho Old Defenders association, died this morning morn-ing at the home of one of her greatgrandchildren. great-grandchildren. She was 101 years of age and has always enjoyed good health until two weeks ago. Mrs. Sands was born at Darlington, Hartford county, on March 7, 178!). When 2 years old her family removed to this cily. In 1805 she was married to Peter Smyck, a jeweler who joined the little army to repel the British invaders of 1812. It was while in Annapolis Anna-polis that he contracted a fever, and his wife with four children at once went down to nurse him. She remained in camp, enduring all the privations of a soldier, and administered to the wants of all the sick. Her husband never recovered, but even after his death she continuod with tho armv as a nurse. She was at the battle of North Point and it was to her skill and unremitting unre-mitting attention that many a wounded soldierowed his life. . Of late years she spent her time making mak-ing rag carpets. She was remarkably active, and climbed the stairs twenty aud thirty times a day. Her hearing was defective, but her other senses were not aflected. It is proposed to bury her with military honors, she being the l ist surviving member of the Old Defenders', Defend-ers', association. |
