Show WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Fifty Thousand Winchester Cartridges for Two Small Florida Towns. Jacksonville, Fla., Aug. 7. "Within "With-in the past week 100 boxes of Winchester Winches-ter cartridges, each box containing 500 rounds, passed through this city consigned con-signed to Reddick and Monticello. Fifty thousand cartridges ought to supply sup-ply a good many repeaters, and some kind of big game must be expected." The above from this morning's Times-Union, Times-Union, the leading democratic paper of the state, has caused a great deal of comment, and the fact that such an enormous amount of ammunition for two towns the size of Monticello and Reddick (West and South Florida) should be ordered is looked on as a little lit-tle mysterious. Mouticello is the county seat of Jefferson county, and Reddick is a small town in Marion county on the line of tho Florida Southern railway. Both of these counties are overwhelmingly overwhelm-ingly republican when a fair vote is allowed, aud in both of them the most shameful election frauds occurred in the last campaign. The incendiary language of many of the democratic dailies and the evident assurance of the democratic leaders of success in the coming election, coupled with the fact of the shipment of such a quantity of cartridges to two insignificant towns, has a very peculiar appearance, and needs an explanation. They were evidently evi-dently sent for some emergency, aud it is reported that other towns are being supplied. Republican leaders in different dif-ferent sections are looking into the matter, and important disclosures are expected. |
