Some weeks ago a republican congressman con-gressman from Nebraska introduced a bill providing for the pensioning of ex-slaves, ex-slaves, and it was stated that it would receive serious consideration. Naturally Natu-rally enough tho democratic papers, as well as quito a number of republican papers, jumped on the bill with both feet, and scored the congressman for having introduced it. Mathematicians at once began figuring out what it would cost to carry out the provisions of the measure, and. they found that It would require a fabulous fabu-lous sum. The Nebraska congressman congress-man finally admitted that he introduced the bill by request, aud that it did not originate with him. It now transpires that the bill was drawn up by tho editor and proprietor of a democratic dem-ocratic paper in Omaha, and he declares de-clares that he is in dead earnest in the matter, and did pot intend the bill as any hot weather joke. Nevertheless, it may be regarded as one of the incidents of the silly season. It is now in order for the democratic papers to score this bold genius who no doubt had racked his brains in devising this plan to deplete de-plete the surplus aud bankrupt the country. |
