Show School Board To Call Bond Election The Board of Education of the Alpine School District authorized a vote by the people on a bond election in the amount of $2,950,- 000 at the regular meeting hold Tuesday in American Fork. The money from the bond issue is necessary nec-essary to meet the additional costs of the Orem High School Building and to build three additional high school buildings, one each in Feasant Feas-ant Grove, American Fork, and Lehi. The bond issue which was passed pass-ed in December of 1953 was in the amount of $1,250,000 to buy four high school sites and build a high school building in the Orem area. The costs of the sites and the building has far exceeded the amount of the bond issue and it is necessary to have additional funds to complete that structure. The crowded condition of the high school buildings in Pleasant Grove, American Fork and Lehi makes it mandatory that we provide three new high school buildings in those areas. Reports from competent engineers engin-eers and an architect regarding the old part of the Central Ele- mentary School in Pleasant Grove were considered. Howard R. Barker, Bark-er, Glenn L. Enke, and Fred L. Markham all recommended in these reports that the building be torn down and a new addition added to the present new structure one-story portion of the building. Lawrence Olpin, the architect for the new part of the building has been consulted and he reports that preliminary plans were drawn for an 18-room unit at Pleasant Grove. Only eight rooms have been built. After a study is made of the drawings draw-ings for this addition, on the basis of the preliminary plans, a decision decis-ion will be made by the Board as Lo the size unit to be built. The bid opening for the new addition ad-dition to the Lincoln High School Building in Orem. was tentatively set for the' latter part of April. The architect, Mr. Fetzer, is making mak-ing final preparations for this addition ad-dition and he hopes to have them completed by the second week in April. The new high school building in Orem will be completed by the fall of 1956. There is absolutely no alternative except to build the addition ad-dition to the present Lincoln High School. The addition has been carefully planned so that it will lend itself freely to a junior high school unit when the high school students vacate the building for the school year 1955-56. Contracts for teachers were discussed, dis-cussed, and it was decided by the Board to offer all new teachers a contract annually for three years, after which if their work had been successful they would receive the regular five year contract. It was necessary to change the wording of the contract to conform to the new legislation regarding the right to work bill. The deductions for dues to the A.E.A., U.E.A., and the N.E.A. have been a part of the contract with the stipulation that they shall be deducted. The Board ruled that this should be changed to may be deducted. Each individual individ-ual teacher who desires to belong to the association in Utah, the nation, na-tion, and in the Alpine School District Dis-trict will sign a statement signifying signi-fying that he desires to have the dues deducted before they will be subtracted from his earnings. K. J. Bird, music supei"visor for the district, and the following music mus-ic teachers in the district, Wesley Barry, Gilbert E. Childs, Ijeslie E. Rees, Melvin P. Burton, will attend at-tend a music convention in San Francisco on April 3 to 6. Several students from Ixhi, Pleasant Grove and Orem areas will partic-ipate partic-ipate in the music convention. |
