Show "k'( ' j ! I , I 4 i . r ; -- I r . , y v jy .i Levi Ride and Tie Race Coming An endurance race of man and noble beast will be held this July in Park City. Called the Ride and Tie, it features teams of men, women and horses competing against each other over a grueling 25 miles course. Here's how it works: Approximately 60 teams of two" persons male or female and a horse set out from the starting point, tentatively planned for the Lake Flat area. One member of the team sets out on horse and the other on foot. When the mounted member of the team reaches an agreed-upon agreed-upon "tie" point, he leaves the horse behind and sets out on foot. Meanwhile, the member of the team originally on foot comes upon the horse, mounts and rides off to pass his partner and leaves - L the horse at their second designated "tie" point. And so on for 25 miles of mountainous terrain. x Sponsored by Levi Strauss company, the event simulates the way two people travelled in the old west when they had only one horse between them. The company com-pany has held several Ride and Tie competitions in California and Nevada, but this will be their first in Utah. The event received the approval approv-al of the Park City council last week following the showing of a film shot during a 33 mile Ride and Tie race at Lake Tahoe. In Park City, the race will be co-sponsored by Levi Strauss and the Chamber of Commerce, and will be held July 12 and 13. According to Levi Strauss Sales Representative Mike Galbos, the exact course has not been laid out yet, but is tentatively planned to begin at Lake Flat and end at the Union Pacific Depot. Arguing in favor of the event, Chamber Assistant Director Shirley Shir-ley Smith said it would be "a shot l in the arm for the summer economy." Approval from the council did not come easily as Balbos repeatedly assured councilman Eleanor Bennett that adequate preparations would be made for both people and animals. Referring to the February Jeep Rally in Deer Valley, Bennett said "the last event we had was disastrous. We had problems with drinking and traffic the police couldn't handle." The council gave their approval . unanimously, but declined a suggestion by Shirley Smith to be a co-sponsor. |
