Show Ward Wins X-C Race A combination of good wax and topnotch strategy earned U.S. Blue Team racer Craig Ward top spot in the men's 30 kilometer race during the North American Cross-Country Ski Championships Champion-ships held at Lake Placid NY March 9-12. The twenty-four year old Sun Valley ID athlete posted observers every five kilometers along the course to let him know how he was doing. In the last lap of the course, reduced from fifty to thirty kilometers because of variable weather conditions, Ward poured it on to beat Swiss competitor John Kreuzer by four seconds for a finish time of 1:30:58.34. In the opening day events of the North Americans, the United States notched second slots in both the men's senior and junior 15 kilometer events. |
