Show PROFANITY, A WESTERN SIN. In the sermon delivered by Rev. Carver Sunday evening and published in the Monday Standard there was one statement which western men could well afford to read carefully. In speaking of profanity as the western sin the minister said that psyschology reveals re-veals that profanity, cruelty and obscenity all have the same source and result in the tissues of the brain. This, he said, explained why a man usually curses when he is cruel to a dumb brute, and also why so many are profane are also prone to use low words mingled with their oaths. Profanity is bad enough in itself to cause one to turn from it, but when we know that it dvelops cruelty to child and beast and leads to the use of words too low and vile to print, we have as strong an argument from a human standpoint against profanity as the ten commandments give for divine reasons. When, as the preacher said, science reveals that profanity, cruelty and obscenity are bound together by the same psychological cause and mental effect, one fostering the other, it is indeed time for the one who svears to pause and think. |
