Show RIO GRANDE TO BE DOUBLETRACKED Denver, Colo, Sept. 1. General Manager Horace W. Clark of the Denver Den-ver & Rio Grande railroad said to-I'Ay: to-I'Ay: "I understand wo aro to double-tiack double-tiack the line from Denver to Salt Lake City. We now havo 100 miles of double track. There will be approximately ap-proximately tMO additional miles of that kind of work to be done. The work will probably cost $10,000 a mile. Word received In this city from Denver Thursday right waa to the effect that the Denver Den-ver & Rio Grande railroad Is to be double-tracked from Denver to Salt Lake, and that the road will spend between $10,nri0,0ij0 an4 $12,000,000 lor Improvements. In his annual statement. President Jeffory announced that the directorate directo-rate of the road has authorized the issue and bale of $10,000,000 of first and refunding mortgage bonds, and It Is supposed that this sum Is to be used to finance the double-tracking of the road One Hundred Miles. Tho Denver & Rio Grande now has ."bout 100 miles of double track, forty-one of which are on the Utah division, di-vision, while the remaining forty-nine or sixty miles are in Colorado. The Rio Grande is double-tracked about twelve miles out of Salt Iike City, while the other thirty miles on the Utah division Is in the vicinity of Soldier Summit. It is also understood under-stood that some of the steep grades will he reduced, which will necessitate necessi-tate considerable tunneling. The matter of double-tracking the Rio Grande has been In the air for some time past, and when Vice President Pres-ident C. H. Schlacks announced a year ago last June that the road would spend between $3,000,000 and $5,000,000 on improvements, it was reported that it meant the beginning of the work of double-tracking the line. When notified of the report from Denver, Thursday night. J. C. Dalley. superintendent of the Utah Hnes of the Rio C.rnade, said that he had not heard anything concerning the plan, but declared that if Mr. Clark had made the statement to him there could be no doubt but that the road would be double tracked |
