K Campaign Focuses on Capitalism Continued from page 8b teach the basics of economics to their employees. Our major goal is disseminating information on what our society is like and why free enterprise works, and why its important for everybody to maintain it, says Robert G. Arnold of Arnold Machinery, chairman of the Chamber committee. Two years ago the committee successfully lobbied for a bill requiring all Utah high schools to offer a class in economics. This year it is initiating the Free Enterprise Study Requirement for Graduation bill, sponsored by State Representative David R. Irvine, to be submitted to the legislature in January. The proposed bill extends the original one, making a class in the essentials and benefits of the free enterprise system a requisite for graduation from high school. Oponents of the bill have expressed the opinion it is trying to legislate morals, not educational tools. But Arnold says, We feel the reason business is being beaten into the ground is that people dont understand the free enterprise system. Our congressmen and senators dont understand it. We think this bill is necessary. |
