Show Memorial Rites Conducted In Oasis Cemetery Special memorial services and dedication of the monument in memory of Vincent Blackburn and Nathan Roundy were conducted Memorial Day in the Oasis cemetery. ceme-tery. The services opened at 11:30 a. m. with a bugle call. George Cahoon, Ca-hoon, of Arthur L. Cahooh Post No. 89, American Legion, was in charge of the services, and gave an introductory talk. Prayer was offered by Cameron Adams, chaplain. chap-lain. Vincent Blackburn and Nathan Roundy gave their lives in the service of their country, and were both touried at sea. They were US Marines. Vincent, was born July 13, 1920, a son o'f the late Earl and Nita Hawley Blackburn, who both died when he was very young. He was raised by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Hawley, at Oasis. He was wounded on Pelew Island and died Sept. 18, 1944, while being be-ing evacuated to a base hospital. Nathan was born Dec. 25, 1920, a son of George and Tekkla Christensen Chris-tensen Roundy. His mother died when he was a small boy, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Christensen raised him. He was wounded on Iwo Jima, and died March 3, 1945, while being taken to a base hospital. Bishop Peter H. Peterson, of the Oasis ward, gave the main address, and paid tribute to the heroism and character of these young men. He told of their lifelong life-long friendship, and how closely their experiences were paralleled The monument was unveiled by two girls, Norma Gene Strang, of Salt Lake City, a cousin to Vincent, Vin-cent, and Kay Still, at Delta, a niece of Nathan. Clark H. Bishop, who was bishop of Oasis ward at the time Vincent and Nathan were in the service, dedicated the monument to their memory. The beautiful monument was built by Henry Hansen, Delia, and is made of many stones brought in by friends from near and far. Graves of four servicemen, Arthur Ar-thur L. Cahoon, Golden Hawley Amos Peterson and Parley Anderson Ander-son were decorated by the Legion Auxiliary. A salute to the dead was fired over the new monument and Taps were sounded. |
