Show THE WATER QUESTION. The Proposed Change in the Water Ordinance. With the view of presenting to the readers the vexed wa'er question, a call was made Wednesday ou Mayor She-maker She-maker who replied to the question, "What is the present system?'' - "The city receives a. petition from the citizens along the streets where water mains are wanted and the council directs di-rects the clerk to issue a 20-day notice to all concerned, to show cause why the petition should not be granted, if the persons representing one-half of the assessed realty, the assessment is the one made the previous year, should protest pro-test or object to running the mains they are not laid." Question What change do you suggest? sug-gest? The Mayor Why, if it can be done legally, we want to amend the present ordinance so the parties interested will have a vote for or against water being taken by their premises in proportion to the number of square feet of real estate owned. I believe it will be more just to all tho people. Something like this will have to be done. The city cannot possibly put iu water th ough all the streets, and, as it is now. a few can deprive a great many from having water piped to their homed. So you can see a change must be made. We will have to do the best we can and as circumstances will permit. Qnestion What about City creek? The Mayor I believe early steps should be taken t clear the channel from rocke. Besides the creek needs straightening in places and its banks fixed up. The 'arrangements are made to put in a divider near the Spicer mill above the city to throw a portion of the water off in time of floods or high water down through the South hollow. It is very nncerlain whether this will give ample protection, but it will afford us great relief. Stepa have been taken providing for this high water to run through the South hollow to the San Pitch river. . What euggestiona have you to offer in regard to th city hall? The Mayor I recommend the council to put up a fence around the city hall property and a cornice and other needed improvements on the hall itself. I don't recommend any particular style of fence. Something suitable either of wood, iron or wire. And while talking of improvements you might say the cemetery, also, will be fixed up. Theie are a lot of dead trees, brush and weeds to be taken away and more trees piantel. It is the Intention of ti e copncil to have better care taken of the cemetery. CCCNCILOB WILLIAM LUKE was also approached on the water question ques-tion and he gave a description of the proposed divider. It is proposed a crib loaded down with rock shall be placed in the channel of City creek above the city. At the point selected, the lace where ihe water goes off to the Sonth hollow, the creek-betl iB- be leveled. The divider faces up the stream and ita point gradually slopes upward at an angle of about 30 degrees. There is a space of 18 feet between the diider and the north bank and 12 feet on the south side. Across the cribbing and both streams are placed nine sleepers holding the divider in place. On the south side from the point for thirty rods the south fork is to be lowered to a level with the bed of the main stream. The divider is to be 8 feet high, and from the- point, including crib, sleepers and ties, the work will extend about 60 feet.' It is expected to cost in the neighborhood of $000, and will be finished some time in May, this year. |
