Show Its Immediate Purpose. Since the so-called Independent party par-ty has been sprung upon Utah, republicans repub-licans should understand its full significance. sig-nificance. It cannot hope to reduce tho democratic vote by even 100. Why then was it put upon the eve of a Picsidontial election? Manifestly to defeat the republican party In this state, even If it should carry electoral votes to Parker and Davis. Wc exonerate exon-erate many who were present at the meeting from entertaining this thought, even some of the friends of Senator Keains, but this is really a Kearns movement. It Is well known that last autumn there were organizations organi-zations In many states at work with a purpose to force the nomination of Senator Ilanna for President. The Tribuno was in the arrangement arrange-ment up to its ears. It published more than ono scurvy fling at President Presi-dent Roosevelt. It never would have done so without the approval of Senator Sena-tor Kearns. The death of Senator Hanna overthrew this very subtile but at the same time very transparent plan, but it did not restore any love for President Roosevelt. All will remember re-member that Perry Heath would have beed broken-hearted over the Ohio Senator's death if the miserable sycophant syco-phant had any heart to break. It is fair to believe that the affection affec-tion Senator Kearns holds towards the President Is not of that kind which would lead him to sacrifice his own ambition or to suspend his fool pride In the President's interest. ,So far as Senator Kearns is concerned, we believe that he wants the republican republi-can state ticket defeated, even if in that defeat the republican electoral vote Is carried down. This is the more certain because he knows that a vast majority of the old Liberal party were republicans and that he cannot to save his soul draw 100 democrats to the support of the Independent ticket between now and election day. Hence republicans who want to sec Roosevelt and Fairbanks elected, and who believe that Utah should not be turned over to the democratic dem-ocratic party will renew their efforts to elect the whole republican ticket. Utah republicans do not want to see a democratic congressman elected, they do not want to see a democratic senator elected, they do not want to sec the administration of a Hairs in Utah in democratic hands. They do not want to see their representatives in congress of that school which holds that "a protective tarill is lobbery:" they do not want Utah to practically slap tho government In the face which has made their wool and live stock interests in-terests profitable, which has made silver and lead mining and tho manufacture manu-facture of sugar In Utah possible, Salt Lake City is expecting to make gieat progress In the next two or threo years. It needs such legislation as will enable the city to preparo for tho coming advance. Tho whole state should bo republican. Goodwin's Good-win's Weekly. |
