Show Would be Unvious O. By CAROLE COLE Review Correspondent Plans WEST BOUNTIFUL are underway to thwart the return of the starlings to West parBountiful next winter ticularly the dense population which has adopted the Phillips Petroleum Refinery as their favorite roost. City Councilman J. Dewell asked at the council meeting on Tuesday, May 3, for an opinion regarding the city shooting ordinance in connection with plans to chase the starlings away through the playing of starling distress calls in combination with harassment of the birds with the noise of shotguns. Such tactics have been successful in other areas in encouraging the birds to relocate. Dead birds and bird droppings have created a problem. The birds normally arrive at the refinery at about 5 p.m. on winter evenings. Summers normally do not pose the same problem since the birds migrate to another area. We took one look at his big brown eyes and it was love at first sight, said Pierson. Showered with affection by his new parents and sister, Tony quickly adjusted to life in Utah. After graduating from Roy High School, Tony decided to enter military service. Because he has only one kidney, he was rejected by all four branches of the military. For several years, Tony worked at various jobs in Montana, Idaho and Nevada. He decided to see if the Marines would reconsider and let him enlist. This time they said yes. Two days later, Tony was in Marine boot camp in San Diego. Hard working and physically fit, Tony adapted easily to the strenuous training. Council Continues Bountiful Budget Fate intervened when Tony was selected as one of 12 Marines from his division to go to Camp LeJeune in North Carolina. Soon after arriving in North Carolina, Pierson was placed in the 22nd Marine Amphibious Unit. In January 1983, his unit boarded a Marine ship, the U.S.S Guadalcanal, for Beirut, Lebanon. Pierson and his fellow Marines are stationed in Lebanon as part of the peacekeeping force assigned to help the Lebanese Army maintain a semblance of peace. As one of 1,400 Marines stationed in Lebanon, Pierson spent most of his time on guard duty or patrols. Davis County used to have an eradication program up until five years ago, Councilman Dewell stated, but they no longer have one. If the plan can be worked out between the city council and the police department, in keeping with the citys shooting ordinance, 10 or 12 people will be recruited to fire fine shot at the birds while the starling distress calls are played. 2 Farulnorn' t |
