Show FATHER YORKE'S TEXT BOOK. "Text-Books of Religion for Parochial and Sunday Schools." By Rev. P. C. Yorke. Third Grade. Second Edition. The. appearance of a second edition ;f the Third Grade shows that the j Text-Books of Religion for Parochial : and Sunday schools, are making their way. While in every other department of knowledge we have graduated text books on which neither learning nor expense has been spared, we have not yet had such a spries in religious instruction. in-struction. The Catholic body thinks enough of the importance of religion to build schools in which it may be taught without hindrance The teachers are I abreast of the times in demanding sec- I ular school looks of the best workmanship work-manship and with the most improved j methods, but in religious science, while thi-re have been many separate manuals man-uals and explanations published, there has been no attempt to produce a s;-ries j such ;.s we have in the readers, arithmetics, arith-metics, geographies and the like. Such a scries must be based on the Balti- ! more Catechism for that is our official catechism, and, with all its faults, is taking it by long and by large as good as any other catechism uwd elsewhere. else-where. Father Yorke has been engaged en-gaged for the last five years in this work. Three of the Grades have been completed and the fourth is announced i " in the press. The plan of the books v.-as devised after consultation with experienced teachers, and the succesu WUtfi they have met with in the sohools is a proof that the plan was well laid. The Third Grade consists of 128 pages, divided Into forty-two lessons. The lessons consist of a Picture, Pic-ture, Reading Matter, Catechism and Hymn. The pictures are half-tone reproductions re-productions of famous paintings dealing deal-ing with the subject explained in the reading matter. The reading matter consists of an explanation of the subjects sub-jects treated in the Catechism or of the Bible story of events alluded to in the questions. Thus the children who are in this grade learn the Bible story of the childhood of our Lord In. the words of the Bible and also the history his-tory of the Passion. Moreover, the Ten Commandments are so explained that they form a splendid examination of conscience. As the book is intended for children who have just made or are preparing for Confession, the Sacra-meat Sacra-meat of Penance is described in a manner suited to their capacity. The book makes a good year's work and the child who has used it will have an acquaintance ac-quaintance with religion not enjoyed! by children of higher graces who have been confined to the Catechism. To teach by the sight, by the memory, by the words of Holy Scripture, by Hymns, in fact, by every means which religion has pressed into its service such is the idea of the maker of the Text-Books. The book Is printed on fine paper, is well bound in cloth and retails for the sum of 25 cents. The publishers are The Text-Book company, Sherman building, 606 Mont- gomery street, San Francisco. |
