In her conscious moments Miss Pearl Hansen stated that the first intimation she had was when the ceiling caved in, burying the little girl and a portion of the bed upon which they were sleeping. Ila Hansen, whose parents are both dead, had been living with Mrs. Minnie Min-nie Hansen, her grandmother. The little girl was a favorite with all who knew her, and her death, coming com-ing as it did, has cast a deep gloom over the entire valley. The heroic efforts of both Miss Pear Hansen and her brother, Lorenzo, to save the life of little Ila is a mark of heroism never before shown in this section. When the alarm of fire had been sounded and willing neighbors gathered, gath-ered, the fire had gained such headway head-way that it made it impossible to save anything, and the house, together With the contents, with the exception of one trunk, was totally destroyed. Incident, to the awful tragedy the Gunnison Telephone company came in for a severe censure. Hyrum Olson, Ol-son, one of the first to lend assistance assist-ance at the fire, made an attempt to call central here with no response. After trying'for half an hour, and while the sufferers were in .-agony from the severe burns, he made a record run to Gunnison for medical to the ground. Ila Hansen, the granddaughter of Mrs. Hansen, perished per-ished in the flames. Miss Pearl Hansen, 25 years of age, daughter of Minnie Hansen-, in trying to rescue the little girl, sujstained isevere burns on the arms, hands, shoulders and legs that penetrated deeply, and little hopes are held for her recovery. Lorenzo Hansen, a brother to Pearl Hansen, after rescuing hisz sister, made a vain attempt to save Ila, and in doing so had his right arm burned badly. The sad accident happened when the home of Mrs. Hansen burned early Wednesday morning. The two girls were asleep in the upper room of the home, and the first intimation that there was a fire was when the roof and ceiling fell, burying the little girl in the furnace of the burning burn-ing timbers. Pearl Hansten was able to extricate herself, and her first thought was of the little girl sleeping with her. In attempting to rescue Ila the night clothes worn by Pearl became ignited and she made a rush downstairs. Lorenzo Hansen, who was asleep on the lower floor, was awakened by the screams of his sister, and after tearing the flaming clothes from her, made a rush upstairs up-stairs to rescue the little girl who was covered with hurninz timbers. The fire had gained such headway that his efforts were futile, and rushing down he sounded the alarm a;md gave his attention to his suffering sister. sis-ter. . Immediately the' citizens o May-field May-field responded, and while some were endeavoring to save the ' building, first aid treatment was given the sufferers. An -endeavor was made to get the central station at Gunnison, Gunni-son, but failed, and Hyrum Olson drove his car for Dr. Hagan, who attended at-tended the suffers. The statements gathered Wednesday Wed-nesday following the fire were to the effect that Mrs. Hansen had gone to the home of her father, loss than a block away, and-that the girls had re- aid.
