Show Local harriers off to the races By TOM HARALDSEN Viewmont High's boys cross country team, along with Woods Cross High's girls' team, continue to have their ways with opponents as the long-distance season progressed pro-gressed last week. The Vikes crossed the finish line six -across again on Thursday in a whitewash of Layton, while the Lady Wildcats remained unbeaten with a shutout of West Here's a look at this week's races: VIEWMONT-LAYTON At Layton, it was another conquest con-quest for the Vikes, who have not been headed this season and are continuing to emerge as the top 4A team in Utah. Six Vikings crossed the finish line together (names were not available by presstime), and Viewmont is the prohibitive favorite entering today's Clipper Invitational at Layton Park. The Lady Lancers beat Viewmont despite a fine finish by Windy Hutching Hut-ching s, who won the girls' race. WOODS CROSS-WEST At Woods Cross, the Wildcats scored a double shutout of the Panthers. Pan-thers. In boys competition. Woods Cross placed first through sixth, with Dave Marx winning in a fine time of 16:52. It was a personal best for the junior. Teammate Jason Anderson was second at 16:53, and Matt Brown third. All ran lifetime bests. Fourth went to Andrew Scivally, his best time ever, with fifth fif-th and sixth going to Weston Bishop and Jason White. The Lady Wildcats also placed first through sixth, led by Jenny Heap at 20:19. Celeste Smith was second, Heidi Selin third and Michelle Devey fourth. All ran lifetime bests. Fifth went to Allison Goodrich, while Jenny Lossee finished fin-ished a strong sixth. BOUNTIFUL-JORDAN At Jordan, the Beetdiggers edged the Braves 27-33 despite a new course record of 14:13 by Bountiful' Boun-tiful' s Brandon Wilding on the 2.9 mile course. Lance Palmer and Adam Smith placed second and third for the Braves. In girls competition, the Lady Braves won the dual with an 18-42 decision. Bountiful enjoyed a full team for one of the few times in recent re-cent history and made the most of it Misa Graff won the race, followed follow-ed by Carolyn Doxey in second, Denece Jacobs in third and Elizabeth Mabey in fourth. Also placing for Bountiful was sophomore Joy Munns. DAVIS-WEBER At Davis, the Warriors took a pair of wins over the Darts. Weber's boys scored a 24-35 decision, deci-sion, but the good news for Davis is that junion Glen Combe is back. Combe won this race, showing the promise of a year ago when he was a Davis leader. He later moved to Clearfield, then out of state before returning to Kaysville this week. Davis is still without the services ser-vices of junior Mike Sherman, however, who suffered a muscle tear and will be out for the rest of the season. Clark Finlinson was third, Neal Sorenson ninth and Jared Allen 10th for the Darts. Weber's girls team won 24-31, despite a third-place finish by Davis' Sarah Butler in a time of 21:04 for 3.1 miles. Sandra Ver-broekken Ver-broekken was fifth, Dayna Smith sixth, Ashley Wagner eighth and Karen Miller ninth for the Darts. |
