Dr. Alban lri!gs with him le'ters from his own !"Ycrnment and from pi-ominent Aznerieau and French residents of Bogota. Bo-gota. He has served as procurator general of Colombia, and is well-know-n as a scientist of high standing. His plan for a telefjope embraces the principle of reflecting mirrors with several sev-eral radical changes from the old methods. A new medium is used, in the first place, for the mirrors themselves, them-selves, and then for focal adjustment, instead of the present method of moving mov-ing the eye piece, the mirror itself is moved to obtain the proper adjustment. Dr. Alban has already built an instrument,-twenty-five inches in diameter, which has been exhibited in New York, and which has shown marvelous power. An instrument of four yards diameter will only weigh two hundred pounds, and unless the eminent inventor has made a very great miscalculation will have such power as to bring the moon within one mils of. the earth and allow observers to finally determine the structure aud question of the practicability practica-bility of life existing on that luminary. An article recently published in the Courier des Etats Cnis contains an account of a somewhat similar telescope tele-scope which was expected to be prepared pre-pared by the grar :. exhibition in Paris Dr. Alban had developed his plan before be-fore the French apparatus was thought of, and that if further success crowns his efforts tae credit of this great stride in astronomy will belong to the American continent, while the United States will be the scene of its practical development and operation. |
