Show P ASSUMING DEFINITE SHAPE. H A special to the Deseret News pub- H lished in its issue of the 2nd ins't j among other things says that Mr. M Tayler, one of the attorneys for A the Smoot Crusaders, has disclos- k cd the purpose of the investigation t declaring it to be the showing by B- the history of the church what its H real spirit is, and that the conncc- P tion of Mr. Smoot with such an or- M ganization disqualifies him for hold- H ing the office of senator. It is H evident that if belonging to the H "Mormon" church disqualifies a man H for holding the office of senator, it H would also disqualify him for hold. H ing the offfce of representative, and H if it did that it would also disqualify H him for holding any other office of H a civil nature, so that a decision in H favor of the contention of the pro- H tcstants would mean in effect that' no one who is a member of the "Mormon" church is fit to hold any civil office. Whether the nation is prepared to endorse this contention remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the protectants, or rather their instigators, are. The great underlying un-derlying cause of disturbance is the belief of the Ladcrday saints in the doctrine of modern revelation, at least this is the handle that their persecutors take hold of to bring about their downfall; but as a matter mat-ter of fact the whole of the conten tion orginates in our own state and is the result of the desire of a few unscrupulous office-seekers who arc to lazy to work and who think that in view of the ease with which a prejudice against the Mormons is stirred up there is a good chacce to ride into power on their backs. Always Al-ways ready to join hands with this class arc numbers of the clergymen of other denominations, who are so solicitous for the welfare of the spirits of the misguided Mormons that they feel it to be their duty to destroy their bodies. If there is a religious denomination on earth that ought to be opposed to church influence in politics itistheMromous The present crusade is caused and kept alive by that very thing. Designing politicians have taken advantage oftheattitudeof the great religious bodies to'rds the Mormons to secure their influence with the nations to prevent Mormons from holding office, if they do notsucceed it will be because church influence is not sufficiently strong. |
