Show Free Press Hundreds of volunteers to clean up Perkins foothills in Saturday project pleads With damage to the foothills along the Wasatch Front increasing as the population increases, citizens are uniting with personnel of several agencies to clean-u- p the area and to help prevent further destruction. Landowners along the foothills above Lindon, Pleasant Grove, Orem, Provo and Springville, city, county, Utah State Parks and Recreation, Division of Wildlife Resources, and Forest Service pesonnel as well as hundreds of volunteers will join forces on Saturday, April 26, in a clean-u- p project of the area. Activities begin at 9 a.m. and will continue throughout the day. The staging area will be at the Grove Creek trailhead with volunteers working along the front above Lindon and Pleasant Grove. Pleasant Grove residents are urged to meet at two separate locations. Residents living in the boundaries of the Grove Creek LDS Stake should meet at the Grove Creek Catch Basin. Those living in the Pleasant Grove and Pleasant Grove East LDS state boundaries should meet at the Kiwanis Park. Anyone who is uncertain about stake boundaries should go to the Grove Creek trailhead. Law enforcement officers will patrol the foothills talking with vehicle owners and issuing citations to offenders. Members of the public can help by reporting illegal activity to local law enforcement agencies. Officials said the foothils are identified as urban wildlife interface, where development meets wildland but as residences continue to expand into these areas, the damage to critical watershed areas and big game winter range increases. These areas are managed for recreation and the protection of critical watershed. d Vehicles are prohibited to protect these fragile resources. year-roun- child abuse Casey Perkins, the Lehi man who was charged with two counts of child abuse in January, plead felony guilty to a second-degre- e count of child abuse on Friday, April 18 in Provo's Fourth District Court. While I agree that any future development in Lehi should be done with thought and integrity, and even agree that any future subdivisions should be made with larger lots and larger homes, I take offense at the derogatory com ments regarding the Lehi citizens who currently live in subdivisions. My family lives in the subdivision behind the Meadow School. We have been here over 10 years. We plan to stay. Not only are our neighbors good people, but it has been a great place to raise children. While I realize there are homes here that are bought and sold, there are homes everywhere for sale. Steve Davis mentioned that the people in this subdivision homes, that are situated on more than three acres and judge us who live more modestly. It doesn't matter what kind of house the citizens of Lehi live in or how much property we own. What does matter is how much we give to make the community a better place to live. Personally, I am proud to be from Lehi. I am happy to live in "never really develop a sense of I have different community." thoughts. There are many couples here who grew up in Lehi and have a sense of pride that we are "native Lehians." I could name a long list of families who are not originally from Lehi who live in this subdivision who have given their time and talents not only to the neighborhood, ward and school, but also to the city of Lehi. Please don't sit in your huge this subdivision, and I am happy to have such great neighbors who have a "sense of community." do Rebecca Beck OK, I get it? Some people have a thick head and have to experience something themselves to understand. I did have the experience and now my neighbors can say, "I told you so," which they likely will do. When my husband and I first had conversations with neighbors about a proposed new subdivision development in our area, we found nearly all were opposed to it. That opposition is why we rallied together and gave input at public hearings, meetings, field trips, work sessions, etc., held by Lehi City officials. At the outset, every neighbor told me that no amount of public opposition would stop this annexation, but they would be willing to try one more time. They had already had experiences and had rallied together before to no avail. Even when there seems to be every indication of a lack of support from citizens, those citizens have not been heard on issues related to development. Even though a survey of Lehi citizens indicates that 54 percent support LESS development, the six percent that want more development seem to be winning out every time. If citizens knew the amounts of acreage that have been approved for quarter acre and less home development they would be stunned. The figures are staggering. It does not equate to LESS development. If you have been watching the Committee and City Council agendas you will see what has been approved as Business Park is now being "upgraded" to Use or Commercial, Mixed Industrial. What has been approved for RA-- A-- l and the like is now being rezoned to Planning 5, 2, for etc. All property that is worth more money. So the six percent who were sur veyed to want more development are getting what they want indeed. Our group has been accused of prejudice because of not wanting smaller lots mixed in with larger. That is what planning a city is all about. That is why you keep commercial away from residential and low density apart from high density residential. I guess those people wouldn't oppose an apartment next to their home complex because of that principle. Lehi hired an excellent consultant to help with city planning and write the Land Use Element of the General Plan. It was well done. But, there are numerous examples of Lehi "undoing" what the consultant was paid to help them do. Public opinion is publicized (thanks to the Free Press) but the Land Use Map continues to be a parcel at a time. What was set aside as open as we space is being Four American Fork area juveniles were involved in a traffic stop, where the investigating officer discovered tobacco and marijuana in their possession. When the officer made the stop, he noticed the smell of cigarette smoke and asked who had cigarettes. No one answered at first, but eventually, the driver produced cigarettes from his pocket. Upon searching the young man, the officer discover another pack of cigarettes, which also contained a marijuana joint. Another passenger yielded a third pack, with a fourth pack found in the door pocket nearest a third passenger. Two more unopened packs were found in a bag in the back of the vehicle; a fourth passenger did not have any Alpine-Highlan- Nancy Thomas Price later shattered when the the door to the dow owner slammed car. "Loss of a Rural Lifestyle" the number one concern? In a year, you will never know there was a rural lifestyle here to lose. At least one council member was concerned that we are not able to get opinions from the people who may want to buy the smaller lots. Well, maybe they should have surveyed the citizens outside Lehi as to how our city should be developed. They seem to be more concerned about their voices than those of us who already live here. I have now "been there, done that" just like my neighbors, and have had their experiences first hand. No longer am I most conin cerned about Lehi. I am concerned that our "system" is broken. Public meetings are lip service to saying that this city wants citizen input. They want us to go and give C&uCcDnoEnsAtScT Available at Hutch's clean burning, cost efficient FOR THE WAY IT'S MADE.
