John Edward Carver, pastor of the f'")rst Presbyterian church, when It Is considered that solitude should not be confounded -.villi Idleness. Ho contends that to meditate rightly, lo grow in loneliness, lone-liness, Is no easy task. It Is the assertion of the minister that quiet and meditation are needed to develop de-velop tho power which comes with the active associations of society, tbo criticism criti-cism and stimulus which these associations associa-tions bring forth. In Ids second sermon tills evening of the serios, "The Great Movements of the Church," the Rev. Mr. Carver said. Solitude Is Hie condition of existence exist-ence that lies half way between life and death. It is the point of vantage van-tage from which wc can best estimate, esti-mate, therefore, the rewards and meaning mean-ing of life and death. Ours is an ni;c that calls for great activity. Home life and soul life suffer alike from being busy overmuch. The lesson of the hermit and monk is a needed lesson today that wo may realize the value of meditation and quiet in order or-der not only to become truly strong, but to develop our best self as well. We need active association with others, oth-ers, for that brings criticism and .stimulus. Wc need solitude and quiet, for that can develop power. Society is an Intellectual stimulus. .Solitude is a curse when In Itself wc seek safety, for evil Is as present In loneliness as in throngs. Many confound con-found solitude with Idleness, when In fact they arc widely different. To meditate rightly, to grow In loneliness. loneli-ness. Is no easy task. Tt Is harder lo curb thought and direct the Imagination Im-agination when alone than when In company. The monk and .hermit have a lesson les-son for us. Il is a lesson of protest against neglect of developing our real and best self. Tho example of Christ in his drawing apart from the crowd at tlmos Is an example for our following. |
